Well, this is the first month that at least one of the 2 units has been running for several hours each and every day and I'm amazed at how efficient they are having just read the metre!

There has been a noticeable rise in usage but only 10% up from a (very consistent) 8.5kWh per day to 9.35kWh

I'd say on average we are using it for around 8 -10 hours per day (across both units) and using it every night at the moment - we're not setting it to super cold but 20 or 21 degrees.

At the current rate, this is around 16p a day / maybe £5 a month max - I was expecting it to be more like at least a pound or two a day thinking about how much air these things move around!

For reference I have 2 x Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 'SRK' 2.5kWh units running off a single 4.5kWh Outdoor unit.

Yes, it's good isn't it. I was a bit worried as we have 2 bedrooms with it installed but barely notice the difference in cost it's so low.

Confused by your man maths.

kWh is currently around 34p, how do you believe you're spending 16p per day. (0.34 x 9.35) £3.18?

Are you in the UK? I struggle to believe anywhere in the UK needs AC at the moment.

9.35 - 8.5 x 0.34 is 29p

I think everyone's got cheaper a month ago but we're on the below 15.72p (+VAT)

Electricity
Tariff Name Octopus Tracker
November 2022 v1
Unit Rate 15.72p/kWh
Standing Charge 35.52p/day (£129.65/year)

Tracker is not a fixed unit rate, tracker moves day to day, so to say you're on 15.72p is not really correct. One day it might be 10p, the next it might be 25p.

Yes - not sure this thread is for you :-)

It's a nice to have but I work from home at the top of a 3 storey house - last year it got uncomfortably hot in the afternoons!

I know quite a few people now in the UK with domestic installs - No VAT helped and I think it will become more and more common.

Yes, of course but I copied that directly from last months bill which is the average rate for that month.

Not particularly - They do make a noise obviously but I'm fairly sure they are quieter than the Honeywell fans I used to use in the bedrooms before getting this installed.

These are the premium SRK units and have a quiet mode etc. The ones in your workplace are probably much larger units.

The background noise you just get used to tbh, we do get some other odd sounds from time to time but I think this is the norm for air con with the gasses moving around and water making it's way out of the condensate pipes etc.

Yeah, our electric cost is low anyway but I was still prepared for it to double when we're using these for hours at a time but they seem to use virtually no energy once the room is at the set-point. Even when we used them for the odd burst of heating at the end of last year (very effective) I saw no spike in costs.

I've just looked at the current weather map & nowhere in the UK is over 19°, although I realise you are indoors in a room with solar gain. It's just that we've gone from a country where domestic AC was almost unheard of to relying on it when it's almost chilly outside.

Humiditities (to quote my daughters).

Even if it's cool, the humidity sucks and the AC helps with that.

Yeah, I should have re-read the post. That will go up, when the differential between the temperatures move, but still pretty cheap to run. Not had much hot weather this year, but the 2.5KW unit in the garden office costs about 0.2kWh to run it in Winter, not been used much this year to cool.

Currently 16.5c outside, office with window open is 22c due to solar gain/highly insulated.

What a great thread. I am thinking of getting split air con for my summer house. What is the best budget brand for sale in the UK ? I am looking to get 12k btu, I see lots of different brands available.

Are they a lot better than portable aircons ? I have a 14k BTU portable aircon but it is almost useless.

If I said yes to the FTXM50N, what else would I need in order to fit functioning air conditioning to my lounge?
I have a big drill and some electrickery. biglaugh

The big outside unit, copper pipe etc and an aircon professional. They were not DIY fit units but could be added to an existing setup e.g. if someone wanted to save some money on an extra room.
