The sneaky downpipe install... one of my favourites. I have 3 downpipes going up the gable wall of my house "connecting" to the gutter - only one of them actually carries water. laugh
It is a very easy way to make pipes "disappear". Your mind just ignores them as being part of the building fabric.

I stripped the covers off mine and painted them matt black as they stood out a bit on the gable, much less noticeable now

I do find it slightly odd that the outdoor parts of these things are so ugly. Surely there's a market for some sort of "heritage" enclosure that would fit in with period properties.

We have a stone cottage in Aberdeenshire so won't be needing air con any time soon but it does make me wince when you see a horrible grey box ruining an otherwise lovely building.

I agree which is why I at least tried to to hide them a little. That side of the house is surrounded by trees so they blend in a little. I couldn’t put them anywhere else as there is a single storey building on that side and the other side of the house is the “good side”.
Our bedroom is on the south west corner of the house with windows to the south and west and is stifling hot in summer. I can’t sleep with the windows open as I suffer from hay fever meaning my eyes would puff up shut if I tried, air con is a god send and I wouldn’t want to be without it.
I would rather have an ugly unit on the wall and a comfortable nights sleep any day.
The indoor units aren’t too obtrusive as we have a ceiling cassette in our room and have painted the wall unit in one of the guest rooms

Just wrap the outdoor unit with a vinyl that suits your needs. I guess it would be possible to take photos of the wall pre install and have that printed

We have had a/c installed by a company we found through "Rated People". Decent reviews but turned out to be just a little more "cowboy" than I would have liked. Anyway long story short, the installation took place during January. Other than a demo of how to use it we didn't need the cooling until about the start of May. Turn it on and no cold air. Typical. And now we can't get hold of them. I took the cover off the outside unit to find this:

Any a/c engineers able to say that's the tell tale signs of the refrigerant leaking out? If so how much would I be looking at to get a re-gas and can any a/c company do it?

Yup, defo looks like refrigerant leak. Where are you based ? I have a chap in the SE who doesn’t mind working on DIY installs and is very very reasonable

I'm looking forward to the heat this weekend, feels like some of the best money I've ever spent at the moment.

Even in the milder weather we've been having I stick it on for an hour and it takes all the heat and humidity out of the room. Lovely.

I think it will become more popular as new builds move away from gas boilers too. It'll probably become as commonplace to see an air-con unit on the wall as it is a radiator in a few years time.

It’s ok - all the experts on here can buy and fit it themselves for virtually nothing, ready for the weekend.

Oh……

Ours has been on almost every single day since I fitted it.

Without it our south facing bedroom is 26/27 degrees when it's sunny and above 20 degrees outside.

It's up there with one of the best investments I've ever made.

Oh……
Er, they can.

Aslong as they can read and hold a drill.

Aye, most people don't forget. That's why DIY units have taken off so much. That and garden rooms/bars/offices. I did next door's bedroom about 3 years ago and have just done their garden room.
I'm F-gas certed up to the eyeballs, but any monkey can do it.

To be fair, the two professionals who came to install mine could barely do either.

Is that because whoever fitted that couldn't put it in the middle?

One for the things that make your teeth itch.
