I put grass seed down on Bank Holiday Monday and I have grass shoots appearing!! I'm genuinely fascinated by how fast its popped up but I guess the conditions have been pretty good (South East UK), warmish days / soil, rain at night and repeat! I'm looking forwards to the end of the next week as obviously it's VERY patchy so worrying that it will be grassy in places and nothing in others but trying not to be impatient and let it do its thing as it will grow!!
The thing that surprised me was how suddenly it appeared! I've had a new fence put in on one side so was out there yesterday morning providing the guys with Tea, but wasn't until the afternoon that the chap who cleared the area for me commented how he could see the grass coming up....and then I looked and there were green patches....how the hell did I miss that when I was out there earlier the same day!
I always over seed after about 4 weeks. No matter what you do it always seems to be patchy. The thing that surprised me was how suddenly it appeared! This is a grass strip about 2 metres wide and 10 metres long adjacent to a stand of trees. It was seeded last year and came up fairly well but then died off due to lack of sunlight.
I overseeded it in mid April this yearwith a special shady area seed mix which I initially thought was dud seed as it took 3 weeks to germinate. Over the last couple of days it has started to come through and looks to be a fairly even germination. If it can stand the shade from the trees this summer it might just work out okay.
You can see what was left of the previous grass which was not much at all.

Have a Swardman hollow tine aerator arriving this week, and ground is perfect for aerating after all the rain we've had. Question, should I aerate at this time of the year or better to wait til Autumn now?
If it needs it, go for it. It will recover well as grass everywhere has only just got going. If it was due to be hot and dry I wouldn't, but we're a month behind on the heat and there's plenty of rain forecast.Edited by CaptainHindsight on Sunday 16th May 21:08
Well the grass is growing. This is a photo between downpours. Although the rain has brought lots of small stones to the surface. The doc weeds are growing well too:
But then along comes more rain. Need some plants to help soak up the water.
99% of the water soaks away quickly once the rain has gone. Although it’s taking longer each time now as the ground is so saturated.

The last few weeks have been good for the lawn and garden. Mild temps, plenty of rain showers. I got in some manual weed removal (dandelions mostly) then gave the lawn a feed. The sun and showers have been very handy in watering that in so it's looking pretty good. The mower has been set to medium height for the last couple of cuts, I'll raise it in the next couple of weeks, then do two cuts a week for the rest of the 'summer' (hoping it arrives, proper!)
Mines come on well in the back, all the stuff I reseeded last year during the wet September has now blended in with the rest of it.
The front still has odd patches but I did have leather jackets under there a couple of months ago when I started digging a new border. I'm overseeing but I'm not sure if it's just something I'll need to treat with nematodes.
