Where to retire in the UK

Agree with that completely We have friends in and around Much Wenlock and it really is a lovely place. Lots of character, beautiful scenery (Wenlock Edge and Corvedale are near) excellent schools if you need these. I worked in Telford for a number of years and got to know the are quite well, but we never moved there for family reasons, but we often thought about it and nearly bought a house in Broseley, just up the road. Although it is down to earth compared to a lot of Shropshire, it has lots of character, cheap housing, not on a main road and seems quiet at night. Ludlow is also a favourite but decent houses are dear
We bought a caravan on the borders of Shropshire as a convenient bolt-hole (only just over an hour away when mother in law was a live, but have kept it on since she has died. Might be a good idea for anyone moving to an area ?

See some of the earlier posts from myself and others about our part of Shropshire.
I moved here from Fleet 9 years ago and I love it. Very few people live in this part of the world, not many know it so its never busy. Lovely countryside nice market towns and reasonable access to Manchester, Liverpool or Birmingham if you need it. Cheap housing friendly people. Easy access to some of the finest roads and scenery in the country. Not much use if you need to work and earn a lot though.
Most days I cycle a 17 mile route through the lanes from my house and normally see 3 or 4 cars and 1 or 2 people, most of them are in next village.
I seem to meet loads of people who have made similar moves. I moved from Hartley Wintney to Bridgnorth in 2007 and have been living just outside Much Wenlock since 2012.I moved here from Fleet 9 years ago and I love it. If I were re-settling in the near future I would look anywhere in the Southern and Western parts of the county, down the Welsh marches into Herefordshire.
Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire are also fantastic areas.

Hello, don't think of that site in Brean on the recent TV programme. Ours is on a small site in the middle of nowhere, about 40 caravans dotted around the base of a hill, with well-landscaped grounds so you can only see one or two others plus an uninterrupted view down the Teme valley. Obviously quiet, but friendly. Caravan is a Willerby, 38 ft long with all mod cons (even an ensuite!) and enough room not to feel cramped. It could work out expensive if you don't use it much but it is only about an hour from home so we can just pop there for a day if we feel like it, we have spare food, clothes etc, so we don't even need to pack if we decide to stay overnight Recommended if you like peace and quiet, but there are larger, noisier sites with bars, entertainment etc by the coast, if that is your tasteRammyMP said:

I love it, but I think I'd want some insulation too - metal windows on a cliff top on the E coast Probably listed and not permitted.
They’ve spent tons on it but it’s proving a hard sell. Local council wouldn’t let them add a balcony as it was the old show home for the Art Deco estate that was built back in the day .
I’ts a lovely spot

Like the comment about Broseley being "down to earth" - thats a nice way to put it

Every time I have been to Lincoln there has always been some trouble in the City Centre with drunks or druggies. To be honest I'd be looking at nice towns and villages and keep away from the cities.
Lincolnshire is great. I discovered Louth while stopping at an AirBnB and have been back a few times since. Perhaps again later this year.An attractive market town, the east coast not too far away, the Wolds inland, and reasonable house prices.
Cadwell close by if you are a serious PH'er.
A good old fashioned cinema, a conservation area with decent georgian buildings, a choice of pubs which are starting to err to the wine bar clientele and of course, sufficiently separated from Lincoln unless you need to occasionally visit the superstores.

I moved up to Lincolnshire from Hertfordshire three years ago, in some respects it was like moving back in time 30+ years but in a very good way. Not had any of the 'Incomer vs Locals' drama that others have posted either.
The only downside to this part of the world is getting from A to B can be a pain as the road network is not the best.

Well, we very much have Lincs in our sights to retire to in next 2-5 years and we went to visit friends last weekend in Market Deeping and Boston.
What it brought home to me (which I think SWMBO had already figured out) is how tedious it really is travelling the roads east of the A1 and thefore we are likely top go as near to Rutland/Northants border as we can.
