Where to retire in the UK
Discussion
Me and senior management were talking about this today,
neighbours are getting on our nerves more and more,
still quite respectable but i think when get in my sixties im going to join my daughter and get a bungalow in the peak district,
we all like to think were a cut above, but we do spend some time there already and we always support the local businesses when we call in the villages etc etc,
and spend alot of time in tenerife as well

Orford is one of my favourite Suffolk villages.
The only downside with the whole of the Suffolk ANOB coast - apart from the glacial traffic that is - is it's becoming infested with second homers who can't quite stretch to the golden triangle in north Norfolk, and they're increasingly bringing London attitudes and London manners and London prices into the area.
It’s not just there, if you draw a horizontal line across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and into Suffolk, the whole area is being overrun with these self entitled pillocks. The only downside with the whole of the Suffolk ANOB coast - apart from the glacial traffic that is - is it's becoming infested with second homers who can't quite stretch to the golden triangle in north Norfolk, and they're increasingly bringing London attitudes and London manners and London prices into the area.

I'm not sure how long this will last. I wfh for 7 years and although there are advantages, it's not all good. Time will tell how many stick it out.
Scarborough? No thanks, I would imagine it’s pretty bleak in the winter. Nearest major town is what Middlesbrough well over an hour away, nearest airport Leeds? Might be nice in the short term but I think I’d soon get fed up no matter how many seals I see walking to Screwfix when I’m used to most things on my doorstep.I'm not sure how long this will last. What happens when the chap moves jobs and they want him back in the office in Berkshire? Yes, how long will this last.
Weardale. Absolutely beautiful. Keep it a secret.
All the snobs go to the lakes or north Yorkshire and don't realise the place exists.
I turned down a beautiful end cottage just up from the river a few years ago with a stone built new garage over looking stanhope Dean. 80k. It's worth 150k now. What an idiot.
It isn't going down in price either. Wolsingham. Stanhope. Lovely areas. 25 mins from Bishop Auckland for easy train links.

Agreed on the manners and self entitlement is easy to spot just look for the Evoque/Velar/whatever

I did something similar 6 years ago. But moved to a coastal village close to an airport and mainline station for when I do need to be somewhere. No regrets even if the locals can be the most negative bunch of moaning barstewards at times I'm not sure how long this will last. "Yes but we will need 5 bedrooms when all the kids come to stay, and when they have families of their own how will we cope?"
Exactly this. And if anything I’d rather try and deter all and sundry rocking up and wanting to stay with us for a week when the weathers looking good and they have some time off .

For that sort of money I wouldn’t be wanting any neighbours.
Or Essex.
You won’t get away from neighbours there even for that kind of money it’s what it costs in Frinton so you’re obviously not familiar with the area. Or Essex.
Maybe explore Essex a little more

So, Suffolk or Cambs then......
I don’t know enough about Cambs but the Suffolk Coast is equally as expensive from what I’ve seen . Maybe not so Norfolk
Few more places starting to come up for sale on RM in Frinton now so having had my 1mln bid rejected I’ll sit back for now

Teesdale too. Daughter is at Barney School and a lot of her friends live up in Teesdale and Weardale - I'd never really bothered to go up there before, I assumed that west of the A68 was the same as east but it couldn't be more different - some lovely places and not (yet) at Dales and Lakes prices. All the snobs go to the lakes or north Yorkshire and don't realise the place exists.

And much quieter roads

The last week I’ve spent in Frinton. Swimming , walking , lazing around in the beach hut, cycling and downing vino on the balcony looking out to sea. Yes I’ve picked a good week weather wise but I still like it here in the winter.
If I had my way I’d go to Cornwall or Devon but the wife is having none of it.
May I ask where you previously lived in Essex before Frinton?

I've not been to Frinton but it does appeal from what I've seen. But on balance I'd be choosing to head South West. Where did you decide on and what would you say the main pro's (other than what you've said) and con's?
I'm in mid/W Kent and the rate of new homes is too much for the infrastructure. I would like to be near the coast though.

Some nice parts of Essex you’ve mentioned there.Have thought regularly about moving further afield but have lived in some nice parts of Essex such as shenfied which was great for commuting and pre schools etc for our kids.
The plan is retiring in Frinton within 2 years.
Today has been sea swimming , cycling , golf and tennis
