I find Instagram handy. There are always houses on there with a before and after shot. Gives you good inspiration.

One consideration is a windbreak to reduce the effect of the wind.
What scope is there to put one up?
Trees, shrubs, hedges, even built up beds or a bank with plants on top. The shelter would help with ornamental plants choice and shield the area from weathering effects.
The suggestions for making the area less stark with better steps, moveable plants etc. are the way to go and allow improvements as and when affordable.
