If you don’t have a gun as you say OP, get yourself to the local gamekeeper.

Yes the resident snowflakes will cry about it but you’ll probably find these bampots don’t understand how the countryside works and think watching chris packham, putting out a few fatballs and some Facebook likes is all that’s required for natural harmony to reign.

You’re probably on the receiving end of inaction earlier in the year. You need to get the buggers early in spring when they start to make the nests, or return to the previous years.

We still get them but I’ve managed to get them nesting away.

If you don’t know the local gamekeeper ask about, the local farms or pub will know! Then ask if he’s got a decent old 2.2 that he wants rid of.
And the local gamekeeper will tell him to take a running jump because he doesn't want to be prosecuted. Stupidest idea yet.

They don't like things that are too orangey.

If you see a rook on its own, it is probably a crow.
If you see lots of crows together, they are probably actually rooks.
It's easier than that, rooks have grey bills.

I hope you don’t drive or walk. To think of all the senseless killing of all those creatures trod underfoot or wheel. Psychopathic scumbag.
Sorry trolling psychopathic scumbag, although in all honesty although you may have visited the countryside I imagine most of your killing is on Call of Duty.

Are they black crows?
They're hard to handle.

Wooah. Mate, look for your sense of perspective, looks like you might have lost it somewhere.

Birds jokes are common as muck, but sugar jokes, demerara.

Is it possible you’ve done something to annoy them? I mean before you tried to poison them. Or perhaps you’ve irritated a neighbour who has power over the crows?

What sense of perspective. Some idiot boasting about illegally killing wild birds. I suspect from the language used that he’s lying so I called him out on it.

My parents have been having the same problem - 4am they’re bashing on the windows and generally making a lot of noise. They moved to a back bedroom but still occasionally get woken up.

Anyway, the same crows come over to our house and have had all the baby woodpigeons out of the nests in our garden. No problem there; the woodies are a nuisance as well so I don’t really mind.

But now they’ve taken to attacking the little owls at my parent’s house and have managed to kill one of the newly fledged young.

They’re horrible things, almost as bad as magpies but, as others have said, they’re incredibly clever. I’m afraid we’ve resorted to a .22 rifle and shotgun, but I think the OP is better off sitting it out for a few weeks until the young have left the nests.
Has to be said, if I had a sniff that the crows were attacking the little owl chicks, it would be “nuke the site from orbit” time. We have Crows attacking the conservatory glass - but it is 16 mm thick, so I’m not overly worried. The two little owl chicks seem to be fine.

I often see crows dogfighting with the red kites we seem to have permanently stationed above my house.

Yeah, my parents have had these owls in the garden for the last four or five years and are really rather fond of them. I’ve got more grainy, zoomed-in iPhone pictures of little owls….

Apparently one of the fledglings took off and crash landed in the field behind the house. Within seconds it was surrounded by crows and magpies but it managed to hold them off. Cue my 69 year old Father jumping a five foot fence to go and rescue it.

I understand people getting upset at killing wildlife, I really do. But sometimes there’s a very good reason for it. Tapping on the windows at 4am……hugely annoying but probably not reason enough to kill them.

This. I completely understand when there is a reasonable justification for killing animals but needlessly killing them is moronic to say the least.

Anyway anyone who thinks crows are annoying should try being woken up by kookaburras at dawn, the sheer volume is impressive to say the least.

I know the stock explanation for this behavior is them seeing their own reflection and trying to repel it but I wonder if it might be that they see the sky and trees reflected in the windows and think there's pond or lake there.

If they're only coming at dawn, maybe having a light on in a few uninhabited rooms with the curtains/blinds open might make them think there's someone about and discourage them?

Try putting one of these in the garden to distract them.

Stand at the window starkers, the juveniles might want the worm but the adults will fly away to a more well stocked patch.

You're right, our little precious chum. Those kookaburras are a fking nightmare in the home counties.
