I know credits are protected and get carried over to the new supplier but what about debts? I always make sure I run my account in debt and owe Avro about £60. Do Octopus get their hands on that or do I just owe it to the administrators.

My account shows that Octopus are waiting for Avros administrators to issue the final bill and then the balance will show, Im assuming that is the same for everyone? I guess there is a certain date the new tariff is applicable from but havnt had any communication on this.
Mine says the same, have managed to get DD out (to Octopus I cancelled the Avro one)
New tariff is from when Avro went pop as far as I recall.
When I spoke to Octopus, they took over on their tariff on 22/23rd Sept or whatever when Avro failed.
Then at end of month the tariffs all went up, so from 1st Oct ish, to their current variable rate.

I’d noted with Octopus this being a difficult issue because if you don’t have finely detailed meter readings you could end up with a chunk charged at a higher rate vs what you really used... in my case I’d moved out (but still paying bills until tenancy end) 3 weeks early, so likely very little usage... and no way to input those meter readings.
They’d said I could have logged on to Avro, but I pointed out that as soon as we were told they’d failed, that was impossible.

This is going to be a huge mess for many people.

Thankfully I owe them about £500, but they’re gonna have to use my meter readings and provide a convincing bill before I pay a penny.

That's my understanding too but it seems to vary depending on the new suppliers interpretation & possibly attempts at minimising loss wobble
I was with Peoples Energy who went pop mid sept & was confirmed as being moved to British Gas on the 19th/20th Sept with an email from BG saying as such on the 21st. Around the 20th Oct I got messages from BG asking for meter readings when i'd already inputted the ones when PE went & when I set up an online account. I finally got contacted last week to set up my direct debit with BG as they couldn't transfer over my PE one, once set up it generated a bill which was dated from ... the 20th Oct, i've queried this and been told by BG thats when they set up my account and when they began supplying so seems I've lucked out in getting cheap electric for a month longer than I should have confused
I've found further minor lucky things for me in it all also which just reinforces why they went bust so will take the positives of what I can get

I feel very lucky that the PE website has remained accessible and operational the whole time compared to some of the others that went pop.

Those asking about debts, yes they are carried over too so you will be contacted and asked to pay it in some manner eventually

Received a request from Octopus for my November meter readings so things are slowly sorting themselves out I think.

I got the same this morning.

So far it's taken 2 months to get this far, but I have a feeling if I don't submit a reading within the next 150 nanoseconds they will start firing reminders at me !

Had email from octopus that they'll be taking my DD for the first time on 2nd Dec. They haven't asked for a meter reading though.

My second DD is coming up so maybe that's what has prompted the meter reading request?

I left my Avro DD (as they said to at one point), haven't set a new one up yet as I understood they would transfer it over? I'm sure I added some meter readings at one point though, can't recall if they were on the Avro site or not though. The Octopus site just says that I haven't submitted readings yet, so it was likely on the Avro I suppose.

The gas and electric haven't stopped, so I'm not worrying about it. At some point they will ask for readings as per posters above and if they don't/can't transfer the DD across as originally suggested, then I'm sure they'll contact me to do that. So far I've done what they asked and given a set of meter readings from the date of Avro going under, so I'll take them at their word they will sort everything out.

I've done exactly the same as you. The original email said to leave the DD to Avro in place, so I have.

Just submitted my first readings to Octopus today though, so I assume they will generate a bill at some point. Will be interesting to see when the switchover from Avro rates to Octopus rates was and how that works out based on the meter readings i've supplied.

I was following this advice, but with another DD due to AVRO next week I bailed out, cancelled the AVRO DD and have set up a new one with Octopus. The octopus one automatically set up for the same amount on the same date as the AVRO one, so some info must have gone across behind the scenes. I give them a new meter reading as well, as th eone from the end of AVRO date doesn't appear anywhere

Received an email from octopus today, saying the move is complete, £335 balance into my account, had left my DD running with avro but it doesn't appear to have moved across, set a new one up with octopus and it selected the same amount that I had with avro, deleted the avro direct debit, hopefully that is it.

Similar here, requested a meter reading, set up a DD (it knew the old amount).

I'd have owed Avro a small amount of money and cancelled my DD as soon as they folded. heard nothing on that yet...

Got my final bill from Avro today (came via an email from octopus). Shows a credit if £9 left and now transferred to Octopus account.

Hmmm.

I left Octopus (moved out of rental) on day they officially took over.

So I have ~1 month bill with them from Avro fold to formal take-over...

But my final invoice shows £355 in debt. Then a ‘balance transfer’ of £355, to zero it. Then the £80 final bill from Octopus.

I’ve no idea now if they’re going to come after me for this £355 ‘balance transfer’ once Avro is finally settled, or if this has to be written off as a debt because they probably can’t justify £700/hr to chase people for a few hundred quid...?!

I suppose credits are protected as they’re in ring fenced accounts.
But debts must be different, and thousands of small debts will cost more to retrieve than they’re likely worry?

All very odd.

That's good to hear. A bit more reassuring. I left my DD running with Avro and have just been keeping my meter reading updated on Octopus. Hopefully it all pans out alright.

That sounds like you bagged a bargain the way things are going.

Final bill from Avro here too, everything seems in order. Will stick with them and the variable tariff for now, I'm hoping prices will drop so don't want to get tied to a higher tariff for a long period.

I've not had any emails, but this morning my Octopus account has updated. It shows a transfer on the 26th of September of a credit of £35. On my last Avro statement (20th of Sept), my credit balance was £42. The last readings I submitted to Avro were on the 30th of September.

Now I've entered my readings as of today, I owe £89. Seems about right since one DD has been missed. At least they update in real time, whereas Avro would take a number of days after you gave them the readings.

They only had it live for about 4 or 5 days it was pretty silly in the grand scheme if things. Best bit is no exit fees!
