Wow. That lounge floor will no doubt refinish nicely. Did you know it was there? If not, that's quite a bonus.

I'd buy it for that floor alone.

Those venetian masks could fetch a few quid. Some people love them.

What do you do with all the cut back scrub, drag it somewhere and burn it all?

Great stuff.

I grew up in Hartlebury and went to school in Bewdley.

So as soon as you mentioned cave houses and Robert Plant I had a decent idea of where you might be!

Look forward to updates.

If those old photos are of your cave houses then you have to find that well, if only to avoid falling in whilst brushcutting!

I love old wells and stuff, no idea why, but it could be to do with reading too many Famous Five books as a boy.

Great thread!

Thanks all,
Mad that someone once lived in the bottom caves and the one in the cliff ;
Note in that pic there is a well just outside the door with a decent bit of rope on the winder.. (Deep?)

Be careful looking for it.. It may not be filled in or capped properly.

Be good to recommission it for added back to nature feel and as a feature if covered..

More pics of that would be good.. I have a well fetish...

edit. Missed McKnight's post.. He clearly has the same affliction.. smile

Evening all,

I’m gonna try and answer some of the questions that have been posted, before I forget…

Definitely aware of the caves at Kinver, we are about five miles away from their ones (and we don’t charge people to have a nose about).

So far the only people who have asked if they can pop back and bring kids/see how things are getting on are some of the locals, the neighbours daughter and partner, the delivery driver from “Hire it”, the builder that came to quote it today, the landscaper that came with him and the guy from the estate agents who we asked over to give us a pre and post Valuation this avo laugh

Brave/Daft? Bit of both tbh. The figures are all lining up though so both aspects are smaller than one might imagine smile

Lounge floor, yep we knew it was there. Been blessed with it largely being covered in its entirety by the large rug that is in the pics.

Venetian masks: Are those the Chinesey type face things in the cave? I googled and that was the only similar images that came up. All of the masks in the top cave are small though (hand sized) so I’m not sure what use they could be to anyone?

The cutback; is being stored for burning on bonfire night. Gonna get some friends round for beers and burnyness smile

Old well: going to keep an eye out for it, thanks. I’ll probably fall down it though, knowing my luck #unluckyalf…

So, onto today. Mainly a bit of pottering about tbh and talking to builders and estate agents etc. The previous owners did finally manage to finish clearing their stuff out of the house (ten days after completion) but they admitted defeat with the rock cave full of odds and ends, I will sort it being cleared to landfill and send them the bill.

Having a casual mooch about turned up some interesting bits though and some nice fittings that we hadn’t noticed before…

log burner with hot plate in the lounge;

^^^ examining this was a bit of a moment of realisation. We could never work out why it was in the middle of the floor rather than in the alcove…. Then we spotted today that it was a toploading variant…..

check the height of the lintel….. rofl

Cave still full of belongings frown

Bosch drill still in its box, looks in good working order tbf…

Halfords pressure washer, still in box

Found a beautiful brass lamp which will now become the feature light in the oak porch which will be built at the front of the house

Glass bottles from Brum

View from inside the cave looking out towards the garden;

Found that the manky kitchen has inch thick marble tops…

And some lovely old saucepans…

And then took some pics of some of the rooms, now they have finally been cleared….

Future upstairs office

Future guest bedroom

Main bedroom, currently triple aspect and will be extend to the left to form a dressing room and ensuite

Upstairs landing. The left wall will become a glass balcony/mezzanine type effort which will overlook the kitchen and also out to the rear garden via a double height glass wall… (in theory, if we have enough cash. If not, it will be chipboard and I’ll cut a hole in it with a jigsaw) smile

Downstairs hall and cloak. Stairs will be repositioned and dead space under them will be reclaimed. Stained glass feature will be being kept though and moved somewhere else in the house…

View from end of lounge back towards the entrance hall…

And a selfie, with our inherited furnishings and surrounded by filth laugh

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand, that’s about it. Not a huge amount of material progress but we do now have power, water, light, a kettle, some rich tea biscuits and a spare lamp shade smile

Cheers all.

Is that a full set of vintage Le Creuset saucepans? Others may think it gross, but I would clean and keep!

It is MIA. Hoping it might turn up in the cave, or the oven. Not been brave enough to poke my head in there yet!

Excellent stuff. I would have run a mile at the sight of ANY of the work that's needed there!!!!

But reclaiming old houses etc is how it should be. Get the wasps moved though, I know people don't like them, but they're as import to the environment as bees are.

Super thread OP, like the cocking about picture! smile

A quick shufti on EBay shows those decorative Venetian wall masks going for anything between 6 and 140 quid, depending on brand!

Being ex-Worcester I had a rough idea where the house would be. OT, but I still grin like a child whenever I'm back that way and see signs for Lickey End, especially since Terry Pratchett used the name to describe a sheep disease.

Indeed, we are fortunate enough to be blessed with both Lickey End and it’s neighbouring cousin within photobombing distance smile

I'm not far from Droitwich, so virtually your neighbour, OP. That is a cracking find (the whole property). I'm looking for something similarly-interesting at the moment and failing so far.

We are in Bewdley at the moment, but yep, not too far at all!

Will keep my ear out in case anything comes up via the people I talking to in regards this project. Local trades and that.

The posting a note through the letterbox idea worked well for us but in fairness we did know of the house and it’s potential etc.

We actually found out this week that (long story ahead) the sandstones that surrounded the pond that my OH used to play in with the ducks at her parents property form part of the garden in the project house….

We think maybe as part of this outcrop that the fir tree sits on…

Essentially the OH’s father (now passed) decommissioned their garden duck pond, possibly as the OH spent all her time sat in it as a child with her friends, covered in duck poo.

Benjy (previous owner) was in the pub having a pint with OH’s late father and asked him what he was doing with all the old sandstones that ringed the pond. OH’s father said he was getting rid of them, Benjy asked if he could have them for the garden and Tom (OH’s late father) dropped them up the lane to him…..

Funny how life goes round isn’t it…. One of the big drivers for securing this house was proximity to the MIL who now lives alone and will be a five minute walk down the lane. Childhood memories and links to departed family just makes it all the more worthwhile for us both….

Cheers all
