Had a chap round last week who scarified and hollow tine aerated. Couldn't do the HTA myself and thought i'd let his professional eye do the scarification (which was way further than I would have gone). Chucked down some Spring and Summer fertiliser afterwards. I'm excited to see the difference!

What a sad git..

Grass looks ace, bar a few bits here and there. Now to focus on the house and borders..

Also, up until last week I could still see some of the S+S fertiliser in the lawn, little pellets. Over 4 weeks since applying, is that normal?

Just done its first mow! A few bits left to tidy up where the grass hasn't sown and to build some planters to hide the man holes covers.

This has just popped up.

Sisis Auto Rake mkt £30 starting bid!
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284816760506?

Might well attractive good bids, but it specialist enough kit it just might not. Even at ten times that is gone cheap.

Others currently listed from £700 to £1300
I look to be the current high bidder on this. Oops.
Ha, amazing.

At £215 with 5days to go it's not going to sell for nothing, but I for one will be interested in what it goes for.

Might have to referb the sprockets/dogclutch assy on mine. It is handy to have, I think I'll do a bit more vertical cutting with it this year, have half hatched a plan to create a makeshift collection box for mine too.

A few pics of my garden. Third year since moving in.

Last Autumn I heavily scarified and over seeded, and its really liked it. 3month fertilizer from Lawn-smith and i've also just started using liquid seaweed.

Mowing every couple of days with the catcher off. The 'pitch' is giving me plenty of headaches as its in the shade, clay soil which has already been dug down, and heavy foot traffic with two boys (and one big kid!) playing football, hence the goal areas.

What is the view here on collecting or leaving grass cuttings from the mower?

I've been moving 2x a week and leaving them, buying it to the supposed benefit for the lawn.

To some degree depends on my mood. But last few cuts I have left.

TBH, it's mostly because more petrol powered tools is good.
If I win @ the current bid then great - I think it's worth all of that.
But if I don't, it's also fine.

I decided not to go all out and kill our lawn off to reseed it. I went over it with the verticutter, concentrating on the worst patches of unwanted coarse grass in there, overseeded with 100% rye and topdressed with a soil/compost mix. Hopefully the supposed high shoot density in this mix, coupled with more frequent mowing will quickly crowd out that grass that I don't want.

Anyway, two weeks have now passed with gradually reduced watering and lots of sun. It was trimmed high once with the manual mower, and this is the first proper cut. It was certainly come on well and will only get better when it thickens up. Any excuse to post a gratuitous lawn pawn picture! biggrin

Before (but after the work was done), and after...

Wow! Good job!

Absolutely. There ar not many other options, or half way house.

You have cheap plastic consumer spec, hire shop rental spec which is often basic and flail based, or grounds keeper spec which are typically heavy as fk, none of it's cheap.

The problem with my lawn is the unevenness, bumps and dips etc, to the extent that mowing it is quite unpleasant. It's probably 250 square metres or so. I have no idea how to resolve it

Top dressing.

Basically, add soil over the existing grass, work it in with a straight peice of timber drawn over in alternating and perpendicular directions to fill in the hollows.

I would likely hollow tine it first, if it's not had any decompaction recently for the sake of the hire cost.

If the grass is in good nick otherwise and none of the hollows are deeper than an inch or so, happy days.

If the grass is also a mess or its deeper, scalp it first, make sure you tread over the deeper area to compact during the leveling/topdressing process, and then overseed it.

What sort of size area are we talking?

Wouldn't you use a roller on the top soil?

At what point in the process?

Broadly speaking, a roller will not level an existing lawn, and isn't very good at compacting deeper hollows either.

I bought a Honda powered Mountfield (sp53h), & have been using the mulching function. A revelation after collecting cuttings previously. The lawn seems to look a bit better too.

I have in mind a situation with deep dips/hollows where a lot of soil is needed, even with the lifting turf method, somehow a lot of soil needs to be added to the dips. If that isn't appropriately compacted (e.g. by a roller) then it likely won't result in a level lawn.

I made the above mistake last year. Well aware of the risks of compaction, but adding loose soil does require some compression to get solid level ground.

Does that make sense.

Yes. Flattened a bit so that it's settled and level, but not compressed rock hard.

It makes some sense. However you will almost certainly get better results more easily with treading/healing the deeper areas down to compact them, than trying to use a roller, which will tend to sit on the high spots.
