How to tell what size immersion thermostat I have?
Discussion
Before I've taken it all apart???
It's a normal sized, vented hot water tank and the thermostat has started tripping out.
It's tight under a shelf so whipping it out for a quick look is a PITA.
ETA we're in a hard water area so they don't last long anyway, makes sense to replace the lot doesn't it?

A quick google of "TS230 thermostat" (as stamped on the unit in the picture) would suggest that is an 18" stat....which is a fairly common size. (I assume it was the size of the stat you wanted, not the immersion coil?)
You'll need to remove the shelf to replace the immersion & stat anyway won't you? Might be worth doing that anyway just to double check - most places will have a replacement on the shelf ready to go anyway, so it'll not need to be in pieces for long.
Edit - Just re-read the post properly - how old is the tank? If it's an old unit in a hard water area, it's possible that half the tank is full with scale and the whole thing wants replacing anyway......Furthermore, it might be worth noting that it is not uncommon when trying to remove the immersion heater itself on a old copper tank that is can (depending on age and crud build up) end up twisting / deforming / splitting the tank, hence requiring complete replacement anyway.
PS: get a water softener fitted if you haven't already, it makes a world of difference to water cylinder life.

Hopefully they didn't put the element in the tank before putting the whole thing in the cupboard, like they did with mine
Had to bend the old one to get it out even, with all the shelves above removed luckily the new one was a bit shorter as screwfix didn't have a titanium one in the same size!
