2023 Lawn Thread
Discussion
Gave mine a trim on the highest setting last week and applied some ferrous sulphate moss killer. Lawn is certainly growing again already. I’ve deweeded and removed the little bits of visible moss that had grown.
Plan of action for the next week or so (feel free to correct or advise differently).
1) Cut lawn this week on lower setting
2) Scarify
3) Lay seed (lawnsmith easygreen) and Fertiliser (lawnsmith spring and summer)
4) Hope it looks great in a month or so

Have all my supplies ready
Seeds, Fertiliser, compost
Had planned on power raking, over seeding, fertilising and spreading a thin layer of compost this weekend. But the temps were down to 0/-1 last night, so giving it a week or two, to let the temps rise a bit more.
The grass is certainly growing - as I had to give it a second high cut mid week last week and it looks like it needs it again already.

Seems like yesterday was the day to start tackling stuff, the sun forecast for this week was too good an invitation to get seed down. I do love the graft I put in yesterday to make stuff look worse…. Gotta break an egg and all that.
But to summarise, got a large oak tree which has been thinned right back so the sun can get through. But after the leaves were cleared was not much left other than mud and moss. Shall have to remember to clear the leaves a lot sooner, we only moved in 5 months ago.
What the starting point was:
After a good solid raking (I now ache) and some new top soil filling in some weird gulley the previous owners had made.
Decided to just got for it and fertiliser went down last night and the seed this morning. Get the feeling this is just going to be a first pass, just need to get some growth going and see what’s what for the next phase. Got a mix from the Grass People, some hardwearing seed and some low light areas, although looking at the lawn now hopefully 90% of it gets some sun at somepoint in the day.

Yep solid frost here in Aberdeenshire last night with plenty more to come given the high pressure moving around. Dry and sunny at least so might be able to make a start on preparing the half acre of sticky clay soil I have to seed once it warms up.
I saw the picture you posted and don't envy you. Hope you have a fleet of mechanical assistance!Yes cold here, lying white this morning, but grass is growing. Planning to get some moss killer down and dethatch after that. Happily my mole appears to have naffed off - so thats good.
I'm looking at buying some grass seed shortly, but about quarter of the lawn doesn't get any sunlight due to the fence panels. Do i need to buy two separate types of seed for the areas that are shaded and the areas that get lots of sun, or is there something i can buy that will be suitable for the whole lot?
Anyone got any idea how to regrass a "turning area" my young dog uses on his mad runs? He's scarified it to bare earth as he's turned at speed.
I guess either laying new turf or reseeding and protecting whilst it grows but he'll just find a new patch to ruin.
Or am I wasting my time? Gravel it? Leave it muddy?

I don’t think so, I mean its been a pretty wet winter and I have not noticed anything got be honest, certainly not from the house. And if we did, and they decided to try and fix the issue, they dug a gulley all the way for the water to flow to the shed, so go figure. Time will tell though, at least I have the opportunity now for a great before and after shot.
My last treatment of the moss seems to have worked, either because I tine rake scarified it when green then treated, and also gave a heavy dose of all-in-one. Got a few bags of manure compost, topsoil and sand. Did some tine aeration on the front, brushed in the sand then gave it the soil and compost cover. Missus isnt too happy since its made the front look a bit like a muddy field just in time for the Easter trail, but hopefully will pay dividends when the compost sinks down and feeds the land.
Did a check of the back as well, last years drainage digging and soil fixing seems to have worked but theres a few areas Im going to have to dig, destone and fix the soil. Once done fingers crossed we have a fully useable garden!!

I have a 6T digger coming in the morning with a landscape rake bucket which should hopefully break the back of it but I'm still expecting some long days raking by hand...
As an aside, if you're preparing almost any size of seedbed, a decent landscape rake with a wide (3ft) head is definitely worth the investment. So much faster and more effective than a normal garden rake.

Can i stripe my lawn with a lawn roller? I have a rotary mower which I loathe to bin as it works great
You can get a lawn striper which are essentially a heavy, low profile roller you can attach to the mower and it sits under the grass box. There are numerous 'diy' versions such as a sand filled pipe dragged behind the mower in the same place, or a brush or flap attached (think mud flap, touching the ground).Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
