Driveway gates
Discussion
I need to stop the local kids coming onto my drive when I'm not at home and either posting flowers through my letterbox or rearranging the collection of car parts I have out the front. Telling them not to doesnt really accomplish much. Also wouldnt mind a little extra security for peace of mind
I've got a modest front garden/driveway area, parking space for 2 cars and a few plants etc
Fancy putting some gates up, but I cant have ones that open inwards, as there's not enough room to open them because of the cars. Cant have them opening outwards as it's straight onto the road
I dont much fancy a Lambo door/gate arrangement
Is there such a thing as retractable/folding driveway gates? And where would I find such a thing if it existed?
I've knocked up a quick (wonky lines and all) Paint diagram if I'm not explaining myself too well

come on man, try harder than that.
there is no detail on the drawings of the cars at all.
call yourself a pistonheader.

How about 2 sliding gates. So open one and it slides behind other, or visa versa. Just with a central column?
That sounds like what I'm after. The central column could be a bit of a showstopper and I'd use most of the space to swing the Quantum in, but sure something could be worked out/aroundI bought a set of gates from here a few years back.
They have quite an extensive range.

Alteratively have you considered a moat and drawbridge

From your very detailed etching you don't seem to have any space to play with on the left (as you look at the drawing) so I would have thought maybe 3 panels that slide in front of one another and tuck behind the planted area would work.
Would imagine it would be quite a bespoke job though. Perhaps have a chat with a local metal worker (the types who make wrought iron gates and railings and suchlike. Would obviously need some kind of channel putting in too so it slides nicely.
Gates might end up quite heavy too so perhaps electric operation might be worth considering.

As said you could do with 3 sliders.
If you have electric ones then you could do with a intercom, and make them open when a butten has been pressed inside the house?
only thing is the little s would mess around with that.
another option is to smash there heads in or shoot them.
Also the gates will cost you a fair bit of £££££££

As a guide, the kit of parts to automate a sliding gate will come to about £600 for a decent Italian piece of kit (market leaders in my opinion). The kit should include infrared beams as there is a defined policy now for Health and Safety of electric gates and they must retract if they hit an obstacle.
You will need to supply a 2.5mm SWA cable to the control box which is mounted normally near the gate, but some prefer to mount it elsewhere. While you are in that hole and pulling cables from the house, pull in either 2 off six-core alarm cables of better still, 2 off 12 core alarm cables. You will not need all these cores but if the cable gets damaged, for the sake of £30 you won't have to dig up your driveway and run another cable. Same is true for the 2.5mm SWA cable, you only need 1mm on a run of upto 50metres, but you will be pleased with your gate install and want to run some pretty lights off it too and its nice to have a 13Amp socket near the gate for your car vacuum, jet wash etc etc. Finsihed with your hole? Nope, I would also run an RG59 CCTV cable so you can add a high quality CCTV camera at a later date, once its down its down so think about what you are likely to want in the future..
As for gates, wooden ones are better than iron because people cannot see into your property. Around here most of the electric gates are owned by Indians who all seem to have the same gloss black spindles with gold spear-heads on the top - why?
Anyway, gates will vary from £800 for wrought iron to £2000 for a really nice hard wood gate with a span of 3metres (thats what our recommended gate manufacturer charges).
