Contemplating a job offer in the big smoke and I've been looking at property in and around London, I've been told to consider Amersham, anyone know what its like?

Very nice town, my dad was brought up there, I go there once a fortnight for work reasons, and only live about 15 mins away in Aylesbury. Nice little town, good atmosphere, and an Aston garage to salivate over too smile

Depends what you compare it to, I would move there from Coventry in a second.

Seem ok from brief forays there for a small town - mainly to pick up the tube into London, so couldn't comment on nightlife etc.

Lived there for just over a year, the river in the summer is lovely and there are dozens of lovely pubs all over the place....go for it

I work there, what did you want to know exactly?

It has its nice parts and its crap areas. Expensive town to live in.

Do you have any specific parts you are looking at?

Lincoln Park was somewhere I'd seen a bit about. Some new houses there, its slightly out of the main town but about 10 mins walk from the station.

Amersham is very nice as are some of the surrounding villages/towns including Chalfont St Peter/Giles, Wendover (where I grew up) etc.

Whereabouts will you be commuting in to? I think it's about 45mins from Wendover into Marlyebone.

Do you have to children to consider? eg. schools?

Quite a few of us commute into Euston from Leighton Buzzard/Milton Keynes/Northampton. Only takes 32mins from Leighton Buzzard into Euston on the fast train.

Yep its not bad, collage around the corner so some of the sods hang around there after, but its quiet in general.

One of my colleagues lives in there.

Its nice walk to the station and isnt far away from town. Its a 2 min drive to amersham and a 10 min drive to tescos.

If I take the job I'd be in SW11. I don't know much about London but realise thats South West and Amersham is kind of North West. No kids to consider, although I think Lincoln Park is near a few schools.

Amersham is nice & on underground line.
Have a look at Beaconsfield as well - under 30mins into central London.
I live in a village called Penn which is 3miles from Beaconsfield if you fancy something more rural. (4 pubs and a village green) smile

Clapham

What are you looking for in a place to live exactly?

I lived in old Almersham for three years, albeit twenty years ago. Bought a very ncie 17th century place opposite the pub just off the high street. House was very cosy, old locals were nice, but the pubs were invaded by pikeys (and this was over twenty years ago). After thrre years we sold up at a great big finacial loss (yes the last price crash) and moved into the country side proper (not just a suburb).

Gerrards Cross is nice (where i am), as is old town Beaconsfield.

The old town Amersham is best but its a nightmare to park - its mostly on street parking

Drop me a PM if you want any specifics.

I'm sitting in my office in old Amersham looking out over the Broadway and still celebrating the decsion we made 5 years ago to move the office out here.

However it is a bit of a big trip to SW11 as previously stated

Just down the road from me and its a place I will consider when I (hopefully) buy at some point soon.

Hughsie you used to live in the same road as a friend of mine towards Watford. I was only at the Ethorpe last night.

Sw11 to Amersham is going to one PITA commute - any reason you wouldn't consider living in... SW11? or SW17, SW9 etc etc? all of these places ( Battersea, Clapham, even Tooting ) are full to the brim with great bars, pubs, restaurants, lots of green spaces ( Clapham Common, Battersea Park, Tooting Common - I could go on.... ) and are IMHO very good places to live.

You could also live anywhwere in Surrey and still get there in reasonable time. Presuming you were within range of a station smile
