it's a bit craggy island looking, but a lot of character features. Wonder what it used to be... doesn't look like a hotel/B&B

Outwards Bounds centres they used to call them when I was at school in the 90s.

Indeed. The coldest I've ever been in my life was jumping into Loch Eil mid winter at 6am at the Outward Bound centre there.

This one was a private home originally, more recently (end of the 20th) century it was a residential hostel for the local High School for the children who lived out in the remote islands in the area.

Start of this century it has been used as council offices, but the front page of the local paper is today reporting that a survey has shown up A LOT of issues with the building and the council are getting it in the neck for letting a listed building get into such a state of disrepair.

Like many of these sales, perhaps not the bargain it first appears...

well i never thought it was a bargain, personally. The only thing i think when i see a low-priced wreck of a house is "st that must need loads doing". There are no bargains.

Nice house. But - Kent (Dartford???). That looks like someone swinging a hook, probably £1~1.5m overpriced.

2 things wrong with this (not including the possibility of a small garden) is the fact it's close to a rail line, and there's a lack of outside images of the property itself; Saying that, imo, that interior does look lovely:

Just goes to show you don't need a 10,000 sq ft house if the location is right. Everything about that is truely beautiful. Are the midges not too bad over that side of the country?

Stunning, however going by the map and the streetview it looks as though it is right on a railway line.

That interior though is absolutely beautiful cloud9

It's right on the main York to Leeds line. No worse than one or two places I loved in when in London, but for Harroagte it's unfortunate. Which explains the price (cheap for a place like than in Harrogate). Easy walk to Hornbeam Park for the commute into Leeds though.

I really dont think the train line would bother me. The garden would be shielded from the noise by the house.

Me neither. I have family in Harrogate and it's one of the few towns I could live without going stir crazy. As I said, it seems to bother very few people in London (in fact, proximity to a station is considered a selling point), the trains aren't constant (unlike a busy road) but I think because of it, this place is a bit of a bargain for Harrogate.

Love the covered courtyard/conservatory, considering the British weather it seems the perfect compromise.

Not that my house is property prawn but it backs directly onto the Western mainline in Maidenhead. We bought the house because it meant we could afford a relatively bigger house because of the railway. Within a couple of weeks we found we hardly noticed it. We intended to move in 4-5 years anyway, 20 years later we're still here hehe It means; the garden & back of house is not overlooked, it's like a wildlife park with foxes, muntjack deer, pheasants, owls, woodpeckers, jays and numerous other birds and I rather like the occasional steam train going through. Busiest time is mid-week in the rush hour when we're working anyway, weekends having a BBQ you could forget the trains were there. I live within spitting distance of the river for walks and feeding the ducks with my grandson I'll not move now. biggrin

Exactly.

You could live opposite the village green and I bet you would still get noise from rowdy teens etc!

Shame you cant get the train driver to stop and pick you up/drop you off though.
