If you want to piss around with the problem, piss around the boundary of your garden. The fox will smell a bigger animal and should fk off.

I was told that too....Suggest 8 pints of Stella first. Stumblies home from the Pub and then take a leisurly midnight patrol of your borders whilst liberally watering.Hth
Best Way is to buy a fox trap and bait it with chicken or mackeral.
You will probably catch them.
Try: http://www.trapman.co.uk/rat-kill-kit.htm
Then you can either "terminate" them or take them far away and release in some woods. Depends on you.
Proffessional help is the easiest way but you will pay through the nose for it.
I have had several run ins with them. Terminated them first and then tried to make my garden as Fox proof as possible. 100% is not possible but make it less attractive for them. Not had any more problemns for a few years now.
Good luck.

As far as the law goes you're stuck with them.

The fox is not, and never has been, classified as vermin, and the Council is under no legal obligation to exercise any form of control.
Whilst some people may consider them to be a pest, the fox is native wildlife and has been afforded some degree of protection from cruelty under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996. Poisoning and gassing foxes is in fact illegal and upon conviction, fines of up to £5,000 can be levied
Surprised me* when I found that out.Whilst some people may consider them to be a pest, the fox is native wildlife and has been afforded some degree of protection from cruelty under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996.
