No, it's not a euphamism, but I wondered if any plumbers had an idea..

Power shower runs out of water while there is plenty in the tank - currently lasting only enough for 1 1/2 showers (assuming one at a time smile ), making the poor shower make one hell of a racket (as the pump presumably tries to push air about)
  • Hot and cold water is still available from the taps, just not the shower
  • No water comes out at all - not just lacking cold, or hot
  • We recently had the tank in the airing cupboard replaced with a bigger one, and the system was drained and refilled during that. However this problem was occurring before that as well (if that helps at all - originally thought it might have been an airlock somewhere)
Hopefully that may ring a bell with someone..

cheers smile

Difficult to know without seeing it, but at the point it runs out (well, just before that) go into the loft and look at the tank up there - I assume the hot cylinder is fed from there - and see if the level is right down.

That's the only reason I can think of.

In which case find the main stop tap and turn it up a bit - it sounds like there isn't enough flow to keep the loft tank full.

If that doesn't do it, look at the valve on the loft tank, check if the ball float is sticking etc.

We had the same issue with our power shower, the cold water header tank seemed to be running out of water, plumber incresed the flow and all seems well now.

Sometimes inspiration comes from the strangest quarters. I was reading a bedtime story to my oldest yesterday where the household had had a similar problem with taps running dry after being eaten out of house and home.

Have you had any unusual guests to tea recently? If all the cupboards are bare then I think I know what happened yes

I don't know if this will be helpful but we had our shower replaced recently. When the plumber was installing a new one he mentioned something about the shower being plumbed into the overflow or vent? Essentially what it meant was that our shower was running out of water. He has since run a couple of new pipes and plumbed in a shower correctly et voila no more running out of water! We now have a pumped one with a pump in the airing cupboard instead of in the shower itself.

I've had something similar twice and I think it was some sort of Bush worn in the unit, Plumber fixed & dead cheap (Friend).
I didn't get the length of 1½ showers though, usually just enough to put the Shampoo on before the flow disappeared & it started it's racket!

Could we make this a general pluming thread please?!!

Our hot water seems to run out after 2 showers worth - maybe 10 mins in total. We have a new boiler (fitted last year), it's a glowworm 30 something I think.

We have a feckin great big tank in the airing cupboard with some sort of immersion heater in it and thats it. The size of the tank in the airing cupboard should surely hold more than 2 showers worth of water?

Any thoughts? Cause I don't really know how to elaborate.

Also, the radiators downstairs never seem to get particularly hot and I've bled them all etc. the ones on the middle and top floors are roasting hot.

thankyou!

The rads need balancing. a google should bring up some instructions.

It sounds like the shower pump has been plumbed into the vent, or on the downleg to the sot services and the cold feed can't keep up perhaps.
Any pictures?
Best to plumb a shower pump to an Essex or Surrey Flange really.

Sounds like it might be not getting the cylinder hot enough, therefore the shower can't mix any cold with the hot water so it's using it more quickly.
Alternatively, where is the cylinder thermostat positioned on the side of the cylinder? 1/3 of the way up at most is best.
Boiler thermostat.
If it's a fully pumped system I'd make sure this is FULL UP.

Yeah, top and middle rads need cranking down on the lockshield end.
