I think the whole George Cross and 'right to wave a flag' took a massive blow when every fk knuckle in England decided to adorn their Astra Merit with these:

yesThe cross of St George, like other great British instutions such as Bentley, is now associated with our national football team and the idiots that support it*. frown

*Note I said the idiots that support it, this doesn't necessarily mean all people who support it are idiots...

There is nothing more pikey than the St George's Cross.

Especially as a logo on a numberplate.

I'm not knocking it in any way, as it is the English flag, but....

Is the St Geeorge cross not unlike the Confederate Flag in the USA? As in, the confederate flag is only flown by Red Necks, the American equivalent of the Chav?

I agree with others, if you are flying a flag, surely it should be the Union Flag (right way up obviously)

Are you saying the Scots shouldn't fly the Saltire either...?

All the flags of the individual countries that make up the UK have no "official" standing as world flags. Despite what some people may think (or wish) the UK is still the recognised national entity in these parts and the official flag is still the Union Flag.

All other flags flown are for "national pride" only. What has created a "chavvy" aspect to these individual flags is that, from a sporting point of view, many of the sports played here are arranged in a "home nations" manner so Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England will have their own national teams. It is when these countries are playing sport that the separate national flags are at their most prominant.

During the last Olympics, the flying of separate "national" flags for the home nations of the UK was actually banned by the Chinese authorities. They would only allow British fans to wave Union Flags. The Chinese, of course, are particularly sensitive to any flag waving whicjh might support a "separatist" agenda.

A friend of mine tried to get permission for a flag pole in his front garden and was refused, suspect it may be in a conservation area which could complicate things.

This thread has given me an idea. Opposite my house are two flag poles put there by the builders of the development, the flags have blown away but budget / staff cuts at the developer means there is no chance of them being replaced. off to ebay to buy a union flag....

If you read my post, I only said the St George Cross. Unless that has become the new Scottish Flag without my knowledge, then no, that's not what I said.

I see lots of Saltire's been flown in the West of Scotland. It doesnt have the poor image of the St Georges either. Maybe we're proud of our nation like the yanks??

For the same reason the Welsh fly the Welsh flag and the Scottish fly the Scottish flag.

My sister bought her hubby a flagpole and flag for a present once. It takes pride of place outside the house and the flag is raised if he is in or down if he is out...

I have just had a very fine Verandah built rolleyes ( its made of decking but we like to think of it as rather Somerset-Maugham as opposed to Ground-Force ! ) And I want to have a flag pole for flying the Union Jack smile ,however when England are playing rugbyredcard down the road at Twickenham then the St George will be hoisted , I will run up the red ensign for my sailing friends drink and my Rowing club flag for my Rowing friends beer, when the Queen comes bow....She will have to bring her own , i can't find a Royal Standard on e-bay !!

What other flags should I get ?

My fathers friend purchased a castle in the Staffordshire area and flew the Scottish Saltire above it. It provoked outrage from the locals and was urged by the council to remove it. Apparently its illegal to fly a Scottish flag in England?

Ah, but you would need to get past the two dogs, house alarm and the fact that this is for him and not my sister (or her two kids). So if you still fancy it, then be my guest.

wink

Oh, and he's a pilot so is away a fair amount
