I have a trough approx 2m x 1m x 30cm and wish to fill it without breaking my back and as cheaply as possible. Can I just fill it with multipurpose compost in 80l bags?

I don't see why not!

What are you growing?

I would recommend planning drainage before you start, and depending on what you are growing, it may be useful to include some 'swell gel' in the mix. Little crystals that look like sugar which soak up the water.

It just means that in drought there is still *some* liquid in the tub and you reduce the stunted growth.

Herbs mainly. Standard cooking herbs.
