You are comparing being out and about on a public road with other traffic etc with being sat in the comfort of your own private home? Try again.
So you can't do what you want in your own home? Do you live in a gated community?

I'm comparing people having hobbies.

I really hope you don't live near anyone!

Me and Mrs Foxoles are probably the best neighbours anyone could have in this respect.
We hate noise of any kind, and go by the motto of "do as you would be done by" in terms of noise, we even speak in a low voice to each other when in the garden so as not to disturb the neighbours.

So any of you who like loud parties/noisy hobbies/playing a radio outdoors/are raucous when speaking, should not complain it someone does it to you - even if you are recovering from an illness and need the sleep, are trying to get your kids to sleep, or have had a really rough week at work and just want to sleep.

I recently spent a whole Sunday morning sanding down patio doors by hand as didn't want to inflict power tools on my neighbours, only for some git to spend the entire afternoon using an angle grinder.

Personally, If you have close neighbours, then I think using noisy power tools for any length of time on Sunday's or after about 7pm on a weekday is out of order. If you have a noisy hobby, then best to buy a house in the middle of nowhere.
+1 I did a lot of sanding recently, kept an eye on when the neighbours cars were not on drive in the morning as they tend to be out from 8-9ish and took that as a cue to start.

No noisy work Sat afternoon & all day Sunday is pretty rough on anyone that actually has a job, Sundays are my DIY days.
I think Saturday until 5 is fine, and even light non power tool/hammering noise is fine until 7. Ocassional Sunday till 5 with an apologetic knock on neighbours door is ok too.

I think key is communication with neighbours and making sure they don't have guests over. I think 'regular' heavy noise after 6 is not acceptable if you know young kids live nearby as they will be in bed by 7.

You do realise there are a lot of people who see BBQs just as anti social as making noise?
If thy go on until 2am or are loud into the evening then yes.

But a big family BBQ loads of kids bouncy vastly etc utterly harmless
Yes, I agree with you, but I wasn't referring to the noise but the smell and smoke. There are people on this forum who have complained about people having BBQ's!

Yeah it's all subjective.

We're in a flat that we've just finished renovating. As we only had evenings and weekends to do the work we had a rule that we would stop at 20:30 each evening and not start before 9 at the weekends, finishing by 19:30.

We did have a noise complaint for working on a Sunday and in the evening from the agriphobic below but a quick clarification call saw that only commercial operators are stopped on a Sunday/evening, as we're domestic we could have done 7am-11pm but thought our self-imposed limits were more than reasonable.

Quite rightly in some instances. Not nice coming home to find the window you left slightly ajar for fresh air has allowed your neighbour's BBQ stench to infiltrate your house and everything in it. Now your bedclothes, curtains and everything else stink of frazzled cow. Idiots. Same with bonfires.

Yes, you can do pretty much what you want in your own home as long as it doesn't impact someone else minding their own business in their home on a weekend.

And yes I live near people but am not a noisy git that intrudes on other peoples peaceful time and when people around me do building work thankfully they are considerate and do it within normal working hours rather than be selfish c-units. This way it means everyone gets along without annoying eachother....imagine that.

So you would be happy if the guy below made noise on a daily basis until 20.30?

I'm doing a big landscaping Job at the moment in my back garden. Planning on breaking out a concrete garage base with a hired pneumatic breaker at the weekend.

I might buy all the neighbours ear defenders then.

Having a load of hedges and trees down and topped, they have just finished and have fired up the petrol blowers to tidy up.

Guess I won't be too popular, saying that we don't have any neighbours to our sides and over the road are various elderly folks who probably can't hear them anyway! Our 2 children are sound asleep

Nah, just be courteous and let them know beforehand what you're planning to do. My neighbours recently did some noisy works and bought us all beers and chocolates as a 'sorry'. Went down a treat wink

Was only for a short period of time, pre-work notes were dropped with all neighbours in block prior which basically said sorry in advance but it needs to happen, let us know if we're too loud...

Regular chats with people and nobody complained, not even once, with most even commenting that they couldn't hear us.

Thing is it was a necessity. We had to get it done before we could move in, with us both working Monday-Friday there was no other option, what could we do?

What our neighbour did during her extension was loads of info to us about when things were going to happen how long etc.

Alsoas we had a young baby at the time they said at any point if builders are making too much noise pop over and we will get them to do something else for a bit (they have 3 kids so know what pressures having a baby gives).
At the end of the build they bought us a very nice bottle of bubbly and had a huge street party in the house all food booze etc all paid for by hem as a thank you & sorry for the disturbance.

We are having our extension now too.... we tooo have replicated the communications to all our neighbours.

Sounds fine if you went to the trouble of letting neighbours know it was temporary. Surprised guy downstairs made a fuss.

It always amazes me that people have no sense of proportion or judgement or imagination/empathy/sympathy for the hell they may be inflicting on other people.

Why can they not understand that a 'one-off' nuisance (esp. with full communication) is part of the give and take of life.

Constant 'bitty' noisy DIY for months on end at times when people have the right to rest from a stressful week at the office etc. is not.

Having a metal working hobby where you constantly use the angle grinder in the garden on nice days is not acceptable, fixing your exhaust once is fine.

A couple of considerately executed party/BBQs a year is fine.

Cracking out the BBQ every time there is a hint of sun, and using lighter fluid/fuels a few feet from a neighbour's open windows or garden such that their garden resembles the Somme and all their soft furnishings smell of paraffin for weeks, and forcing them to swelter indoors with shut windows on the hottest days of the year, and generally ruining/making them dread summer every year is not.

The law, tort of nuisance, and the Environmental Protection Act (also covers noise/smoke/fumes) also recognise the same distinction - it is not black and white. The law recognises that no one has the right to interfere with your amenity of your own property, your 'quiet enjoyment'.

A quick look on any of these threads and you could be forgiven for thinking that the whole world is a nasty hateful place.

Meanwhile, back in the real world. Everyone knows they are entitled to be noisy until 10 pm but this is tempered by a desire to be reasonable to neighbours.
People refrain from waking neighbours children up by exercising a tiny bit of consideration and those neighbours are eternally grateful for it and everyone gets on well and enjoys life more as a result.

Actor George Clooney paid for his neighbours to stay in a hotel while disruptive building work was being carried out.
