Hiring a cleaner?
Discussion
My partner and I are looking to hire a cleaner for our apartment, but we're not sure how many hours we should look for.
The property is a smallish 1 bed apartment in an old Victorian building - high celings, quite dusty area etc. We're in the south east, but not in a London suburb.
We're looking to have the usual - hoover, dust, polish, clean bathroom & kitchen, clean the windows (every other week), change bedding and probably do the ironing (onsite, we can do the laundry).
I've looked at a few websites for local cleaners, and it wold seem £10/hour is the expected rate; or we could advertise and get someone locally for £8/hour or similar.
Do you think two hours a week would be about right?
I'm leaning towards using a professional company, but I wouldn't mind hiring a local college girl if she was good enough.

Well I manage to clean a 4 bedroom house in 3 to 4 hours (hoover, dust, clean kitchen, 2 bathrooms and an on-suite, wash all tiles floors, general tidy up and empty the bins). I also do the inside windows every couple of weeks. But I don't do the ironing, but I do tend to hang out washing.
I am currently getting approx £10 per hour

My parents have a cleaner 2.5 hours each week and she's paid £25. My parents supply all the cleaning materials that she needs, and she has her own rota system of what she's cleaning extra that week. Sometimes she also does diy type stuff on top of her cleaning tasks.
A good cleaner is worth their weight in gold, and my parents are very thankful that they have her. They'd like to have her for more hours, but she's booked elsewhere.

How doeas it work? Does the cleaner come in when you're out? Presumably that means giving them a key and degree of trust.
With my parents, they'd be in the lounge area while their cleaner did the bedrooms/bathrooms and hall area. My dad would then nip off to do some shopping/ visit the library etc. and my mum would then either stay sitting in the lounge whilst the dusting or whatever was being done or have a rest in the bedroom. They've had their cleaner for over 5 years and are very happy with her, so the trust has already been earnt - she doesn't have the keys to the house, though if there was a need for her to have them on a temporary basis, then I'm sure that would happen.I pay £10 ph. seems to be the going rate.
Mine does all the cleaning, changing bedlinen, washing and generally anything that she thinks needs looking at. Also makes sure that the fridge isnt empty, dog has been fed and organises window cleaners and handyman etc..
She does Monday am and Thursday am. so about £250pm average I suppose.
Whatever you decide find someone you are totally comfortable with.

About £10 an hour seems ok to me.
When you say you are considering a "company" - have you had a quote yet? Ours worked out in the region of £160 PCM for 2 hours a fortnight. Oh, but they provided the materials....
Yeah, quote (without them coming to see the place) = £85pcm for 2 hours a week. When you say you are considering a "company" - have you had a quote yet? Ours worked out in the region of £160 PCM for 2 hours a fortnight. Oh, but they provided the materials....

4 hours a week. 2 hours on a Monday and 2 hours on a Friday, alters slightly sometimes. £7.50 an hour and she does everything including my ironing. And she's a smoking hot Eastern European
