We have recently moved into a property and unfortunately it has pipes that drop down from the first floor for the radiators. The house has solid floors with parquet flooring so wanted to know what alternatives we have if we want to make them less obvious. The first plumber we spoke to did not recommend putting them in the wall as he reckoned the plaster would crack due to the heat from the pipes. Is this correct or does he just not want to do it? Also assume they could be rerouted into the corner where they would be less visible. Any suggestions?

The trick is to get the pipes deep enough into the wall so that there is a good layer of plaster covering them. Cut the chases and cover the pipes in plastic capping (this helps leave a small expansion gap and also stops the plaster touching and corroding the copper.

Bring them down alongside the windows and the curtains will cover most of the drop. Paint the rest to match the wall. Otherwise I'd live with it. Channeling out the wall will make a hell of a mess. Dust everywhere.

I certainly wouldn't put them in the wall.

You can get wide conduit that holds flow and return pipes - looks quite neat.
Only other option is removing the skirting but that might mean repositioning rads to take account of door openings.

Thanks for the replys. We plan to use special skirting to handle the horizontal pipes but it is the vertical pipes we need to sort out as wife does not want curtains so cant hide them behind them!!

If you clip the pipes with Talon pipe clips, you can buy a trunking that clips straight onto them, put them in a corner of a room and paint them the same colour as the wall, you'll barely notice them.

Spend the money and get them rerouted so they drop down in the closet corner to the rad, much easier to hide them in a simple boxing system, also easier to get at them if they leak at a later stage. Good luck
