Is it possible to get a lamp post moved? We are moving into a new house next week and there is only a single driveway. There is room to extend the drive but there is a lamp post in the way.

I understand that we will probably have to stump up the cost but is the council likely to even entertain the idea of moving the post?

Yes it is and the procedure is relalively straight forward. The biggest headache is the wiring.

Contact the local highways dept and they can run through the application.

Moved a lamp post on a contract a couple of years ago, as said, contact the highways department and they'll take you through it. Doing ours cost about £1k iirc (taking out and reinstating), but there was little wiring/excavation to be done, which if there is, will make it more expensive. Not a difficult job at all though.

Edit: Just found the relevant info. Was three years ago, cost £1250 plus VAT. We contacted the Council's Street Lighting Operations dept.

I'm quite surprised by that price. I would have expected much more.

Knowing how the council works, they would probably just stick it up in the same lcoation.

I had a similar issue at my current place and found out that the council were looking to reduce energy costs by moving lampposts further apart .. so they eventually sorted the problem for me - might be worth checking if out.

My local authority are replacing street lighting all over the city and suburbs (A three year programme!)

When they got to our area, they planned to add additional street lights to improve visibilty at a junction. This involved placing a new one at the end of my drive - I came home from work and found a cirle and a cross sprayed onto the pavement.

Not being entirely happy with it's location, I took out a bit of paint stripper to wash away the mark, and made a new circle/cross about eight feet further down the road.

Two days later a lamp post was erected exactly where I wanted
