I used sheets of 1/2 inch MDF for the tops of mine, with several coats of polyurethane varnish on the top.

Use a bit of worktop.. at least you can then bolt things to it... vices, pillar drills etc....

and it's wipe clean...

6x2 running longways for the worktop, held underneath by more 6x2 running fore/aft on top of the legs. Top with (replaceable) hardboard and edge with oak.

That's how my father made his in about 1950 and I'm still using them smile

Just one thick layer. I figured I could replace it if I ever needed to, but it's fine after a few years of abuse, including welding on it etc. I've got a pillar drill, a grinder and vices bolted to it, no problems.
Work top'd be fine as well.

I have a 3/8" thick aluminium sheet on top of an MDF sheet on my wooden bench. It makes things like welding on it so much easier, and it's always wipe clean. I doubt getting a similar sheet/plate would be cheap mind, but then mine was free from work as they didn't know they were binning it. wink

I originally planned to cover mine with metal sheet for exactly that reason, but never got around to it.

I'm just about to build my own bench today, going to be a mix of scraps lying about. Couple of fenceposts, 4x2, 3x2, 15mm MDF and a few bits of random sized stuff from an old bed. I dread to think what it will end up looking like but at least it'll be strong biggrin

Not bad at all sir! Although if it were my bench, I'd be tempted to double up with the top layer, but only because I have a vice bolted to my bench and I use it for making repair sections so it gets hit quite a lot. If you don't intend doing such things, then there's no real need!
