It sounds cliche but you will know when the time is right, it's an undeniable gut feeling. My thoughts are with having been both in the position of helping very poorly animals recover and equally do the kindest thing for them.

I know how you must be feeling. It's not good but I often wish we had the same opportunity, at least our pets have the chance of a dignified end. Strangely, despite the fact that I have owned many cats, I have never had to have one put down. You must have given yours a very enjoyable life!
My best friend/fiancee has a dog which I bought her 17 years ago. He is getting quite poorly and I know that I/we will have to take him on the one-way trip soon. She will be utterly devastated as her pooch has been an extremely good companion for all these years.

Some time ago I had to take my 14 year old black lab on her last trip, then 3 months later my 12 year old GSD! This was just after splitting up with my ex-wife... God I miss those dogs so much!

sadly , we had to make the descision to get the vet in to put our dear old Bonza to sleep

we tried our best , 3 weeks of treatment , and 4 x 250km journeys across remote Siberia to the vets,

unfortunately the liver problem was found to be incurable sad day for all and a dearly missed friend , very young at 5 years old, but probably the happiest dog in Siberia !!

the strange thing was during the last few weeks , our cat Garfield would not leave Bonza , he slept in his kennel and when the vet arrived , he rolled on his back and snuggled in to Bonzas muzzle , it was if he knew the end was near.

RIP

Well Bob Passed away sat curled up on my knee at 15:15 today, with a little help from the vet..

She's now in her favourite spot in the garden, listening to the birdies and no doubt dreaming about catching butterflys..

RIP mate, you'll be missed

frown. Never ever easy but so close together makes it seem so much worse. I hope it's not the case this visit.

So sorry to hear this.

We lost two cats in six months recently, it's one of the worst things about owning a few elderly animals.

The only saving grace is to know that you've given them a good and happy life.

2 obviously loved cats, now together again. So sorry for your loss - I'm going to be there soon I suspect with my old ladies who are 15.5 and very arthritic. Just hope I can be as brave as you.

Hi, I have to put down my GSD a couple of weeks back - got her from Battersea six years ago, they reckoned she was between 5 to 7. I thought she had a stroke as her head was one sided, she was soiling herself and had lost the cheeky grin and wink she had right up until the end.

I took the choice to give her dignity and the vet did the deed and she was cremated. All in all, the level of service was brilliant. Got a card signed by all the vets and nurses offering their condolences and she was cremated on her own and returned within 5 working days.

Has to be said, Companion Care at Pets @ Home +100.

I'm just struggling teaching the other two dogs I have that she is gone forever :/ Any tips guys?

It just takes a bit of time for them to grieve.

I don't know why I open these threads, they upset me so.

Too late for you, Lou, but for anyone else who comes up against this problem... we have always had the vets come out to put our dogs to sleep at home.

One of us takes the other dogs out while the vet does the necessary, but just leave the body so that the others can see and sniff it when they get back, before we bury it.

Surprisingly, they seem to accept this totally without distress and then just get on with life as if nothing has happened (more or less; we have one very nervous/insecure dog from a rescue background who was a bit restless for a day or two after her best friend was put to sleep, but nothing major). Perhaps it's that if one of their number just goes missing, the instinct to try and regroup the pack causes stress/uncertainty because it can't be satisfied, whereas they seem to be much more accepting of death than humans and if they know the other dog is dead, well, that's that.
