I'm currently have a problem with the surface of my pond, the water is actually very clear so I don't think the UV is knackered.

I'm getting some very thick algae appear on the top of it, haven't had it like this before and as soon as I try and scoop it all up it reappers a few days later.

Anybody know what it could be ? - i'll go and take a picture as well.

(and no, its not frogs spawn !!)

Looks like blanket algae to me, very common this time of the year. Mainly due to the sun. There are plenty of algae blanket removes chemicals on the Market, check your nearest fish shop for one. Normally clears up with a weeks treatment.

Have you got an external box filter? Do the sponges need cleaning/replacing. Make sure its not bypassing the sponges.

I have the same problem. All I do is drag it out every couple of days. The UV set up and filters make absolutely no difference as far as I can tell.
I also tried some of the organic blanket weed remover to no avail. A few fish have died since introducing it also so will never try that again.
Think the only cure is to take it out by hand unless someone knows otherwise. Much worse this year for some reason!

Yep, external box filter. Cleaned it all out before I went on holiday, put a new UV in, etc. Came back and it was all messy again.

Will check the filter again.

Odd as i've never had this sticky gooey mess before !!

Had this problem myself,I used a product called cloverleaf, its a natural product which turns the pond milky white for a few days and does not harm the fish but kills off the blanket weed and algea it requires the filter to be cleaned more often whilst in use, just a thought have you changed the uv recently as i believe that that they last around 6 months max.Bill.

What you need is something called "blanket answer" this will clear it completely within a day or so & remember not to clean out the filters with tap water because you will wash away the bacteria that all ponds need to survive.

Also don't be fooled by the fish (if you have any) & don't let them dictate how much food they want!
I made this mistake by over feeding them & has resulted in high ammonia levels which has killed 2 of my fish within the last 4 days.
I am currently battling to get the levels back to normal & this can be a massive issue if left.
I have 5 fish left, all a decent size & an egg cup full of food once a day is all they require where as I was throwing in a couple of handfulls.

Without a filter & UV light, you will not clear it full stop.

I am guessing it will cost approx £200 for the size of the pond. I take it that there are no fish?

The plants in there must be providing the oxygen for them.
Worth a look on here.

Thanks Boobles thumbup

I hardly ever feed my fish so it can't be extra food in the pond !!

The filter is always washed in some of the pond water too.
