Hi, we have a 11 months old fully litter trained tabby but recently come across a problem. He had a normal toilet routine going on and was always happy with his litter tray, usually did a poop once in the morning and once in the evening.

About a month ago we decided to change his dry food flavour from chicken to tune and although he had taken it before there was a long gap between the last time he had it. After a day or so he started having a upset stomach with severe diarrhoea and after starving him for 24 hours and feeding him with boiled chicken for a few days, we decided to take him to the vets.

The vet didn't really know the cause of the problem but said it was likely due to the food change so she prescribed some medication and only after 3 doses we discovered he had got constipated and went on to feed him wet food but still no luck. A week had gone past and we went back to the vets, he has gained 600 grams in one week and had gotten pretty bloated. They tried a enema but still no luck and we were told if he didn't do a poop by the next morning they had to operate on him.

Luckily he managed to poop that night but again but after this incident we noticed he had stopped pooping in his tray but urinating was normal

Around a day later we discovered his feces in the garden and also caught him doing a wee there too but since then he has stopped doing his poop in his tray and actually waits until we open the door this has caused a big problem as his normal routine has changed and he is a house cat and we only let him out in the garden during the day also we don't actually know if he is consistently doing his business or if he is has some problem.

Just wanted to know if theres a reason behind this obviously the stomach upset has affecte him but is there anything we can do or is it just a typical cat behaviour. Would really appreciate some feedback!

I would also like to add we had recently changed his tray to a larger one and he seemed to have adopted well until this problem has occurred!

If he had pain on using the litter tray when trying defaecate he is likely remembering this so does not want to use the tray due to the unpleasent memories.

As mentioned above try another tray and place it elsewhere.

Ours never pooped outside, always in her cat tray until for some reason. She used to hold it and whinge and whine at the door to be let in to use her litter tray rather than go outside. But, maybe by coincidence, we changed her litter to a wood based one, used that once and then whenever she needed a poop or wee she'd go outside in the garden (to which the dog yummed it up immediately! frown ). She did that for a month before starting to use her tray again on occasion she was in, but this time she also uses outside aswell.
