2 is harder than 1 if you get the 2nd a year after the 1st. You then have problems trying to stop them eating each others food and/or 1 of them just eating all of it! You have to control their interaction due to the size difference. Like you we wanted to test the water with just one cat initially. It's all worked out ok really.

CPL quite often have older cats that can only be rehomed without other cats.

But you want a kitten (as do most people, a surprising proportion of whom then seem alarmed to find they don't remain kittens forever...)

hehe we aren't that stupid we know they will grow into Cats, but I would like to be a part of that process, I am (rightly or wrongly) assuming that the younger you get the cat then there is less chance of mental abuse having happened and you have time to train them and learn their character, plus of course for purely selfish reasons Kittens are very very cute and we get them for hopefully the longest amount of time

I will think about getting 2 at the same time

ha ha! good luck with that. Little sods ;-) What you need to realise is that once you open your house to a cat, you become the servant. Don't misunderstand, I'm a cat person through and through, but you don't ever own a cat, you just look after it for the time being!

We did manage to train ours to come when we whistle, and we do walk them around the farm once or twice a week if the weather's good and they're not snoring in a corner somewhere,so *some* element of training is possible, aside from the obvious litter/garden training of course!

I'm dead envious. Our two girls are 10 and slowing down a bit now, allegedly, though the trail of corpses through the house last night tells a different story..

Cat training's not too hard if you're parient. Our three have learned not to climb us in an attempt to get to the food we're preparing.

They sit in a row and wait to be offered a treat in exchange for giving us their paw.

We dicided it was prefereable to them, as kittens, launching themselves mid-thigh and clinging on to you.

this^^^

mine has learnt the following:
not too get on the kitchen side
not to climb the curtains
not to sleep in the utility room sink while the washing machine is running (water outlet runs into)
not to try and put her head in the dogs food bowl while he is eating
not to climb onto my back (or otherhalfs) if we crouch down
if she bites the dog, he will move
if she jumps on him while he's asleep he will move

she's a great little cat cloud9

We got 2 kittens from the local cats protection league last year. They had loads of kittens in, but hardly any on the website.
I'd go for 2 every time, they might double the food expense but it's worth it for entertainment alone.
When we've had to keep them in because of the odd scrape, they go stir crazy. Couldn't live with them as house cats, they'd drive me nuts.

Much that I like cats and dogs (I've a cat) I don't understand it when people say they "love" their animals.

Just seems a bit odd.
Love is for other humans and chocolate/chips/crisps and other foods. yes

Is it a doorway to a chocolate world?

Get 2

Just for the enertainment value

2 will pay together when you are out

You won't feel so bad about leaving 2 on their own overnight

2 will cuddle, take over the bed, fight, play biggrin

Get them together if possible to make your life easier wink

You can get cat flaps to fit double glazed units.

I don't have a cat flap, but I don't like mine to be out when I'm not home (as I lost one to the road when i left the house), but they are both used to the window being closed & shouting to be let back in! :hehe;

I had mine when he was 6 months old. We didn't plan on having him, my next door neighbour who has 2 black cats used to come over to see us regulary and they had a third cat of his brother that couldn't look after it only problem was that the 2 black cats 2 years older than him kept fighting him. So we ended up having him it took a couple of months for him to go outside and would only go into the garden but now during the summer we don't see him all day but wants a fuss when we are asleep.

Cats dont mind being on there own mine perferes it when theres only 1 of use in the house but due to the amount of cats around use he has a few cat friend we see him with regulary.

You can teach cats ive taught mine to lie down, pawr ext when he gets treats and he can jump no problems out of our window which is a good 4 foot tall, but we leave the kitchen window open for him when its not cold so he comes and goes as he please and during the winter he cries constantly to be let in you here him eventuely.

As other as said they own you not you own them.

Here my little bugger and one more thing be prepared to find animals brought him as a present i found a mouse under my bed the other week hes come back with a jack door ones which was still alive to today ive no idea how he caught it and jumped through the window it was much bigger than him.

If you want your cat to go outside then pedigree isn't the way to go as unfortunately the risk of theft is very high. I cannot recommend rescuing a cat enough, and the rescues do have an abundance of kittens however as they understandably are rehomed faster than long term residents they don't usually make it onto the websites. All five of my cats are from various rescues, the latest one from the cats protection league.
