Just been woken up to the sound of an excited doggie chasing something round the house and discovered this in the bathroom. Should i just Chuck a towel on it and get it outside, or am i supposed to call the rspca or something?

I don't think it can fly anymore...and have no idea what it is.

Looks like a common quail to me, but hard to tell as I can't really see if it's plump enough from that that. I'm not sure if Quails are native in the UK but they are definatly kept as pets, so it could well be an escapee. They do tend to run rather than fly as well, so it may be fine in that department.

I'm not an expert but it does look like a quail - my wife used to keep a couple. Sadly it may not be an escapee. Quail's eggs are a sought after delicacy but after they stop laying some owners just throw them out, leaving them to the local predators.

ETA: Our's were kept to the end of their natural lives.

ETA: It may be not able to fly because it's wings have been clipped - they are quite flighty otherwise. We didn't clip our's and it made for a few fun times catching escapees.

Looks close to a female Quail, the eye marking is a little different however.

Which you have sentenced to death by dumping it in your garden, if the above is true from the Quail fanciers among us. Go pick it up, box it and ring RSPB.

Who cares what it is, it's tooled up with a razor, I'd steer clear if I were you and not agitate it.

Definitely a female quail so could well be an escaped pet (hence why it was in your house) rather than a wild bird (which are pretty timid and hard to see).

You should have shaved it.

I think you're on to something here, it can't fly so that's a tick in the penguin box.
