What kind of bird is this is? (in my house)

Looks like a common quail to me, but hard to tell as I can't really see if it's plump enough from that that. I'm not sure if Quails are native in the UK but they are definatly kept as pets, so it could well be an escapee. They do tend to run rather than fly as well, so it may be fine in that department.
I'm not an expert but it does look like a quail - my wife used to keep a couple. Sadly it may not be an escapee. Quail's eggs are a sought after delicacy but after they stop laying some owners just throw them out, leaving them to the local predators.
ETA: Our's were kept to the end of their natural lives.
ETA: It may be not able to fly because it's wings have been clipped - they are quite flighty otherwise. We didn't clip our's and it made for a few fun times catching escapees.
