So, a dead pigeon has appeared in the garden in the last hour or so.

No visible signs of damage or attack.

Looks healthy enough (well apart from being a bit stiff), feathers all intact.

Did it die of boredom?

Something it ate?

Or is this something sinister, should I expect headless rabbits any time soon?

This is where it appeared. I turned it over to check it wasn't half-eaten or a zombie or something.

Very few animals "just die". Birds will get eaten by something long before they die of old age. If one gets a cold, for example, it'll probably be dopey enough to get caught by a cat.

Is it underweight? It could have starved or trichomoniasis (canker) is common. Feel its breast and have a look in its throat if you want to investigate.

Someone probably fed it dry rice then it drank water and the rice expanded inside it and "pop"

These are not the words of experience talking...

I've collided with two pigeons and find the number of feathers worn by these winged wallies quite amazing.

OP...chuck it up and whack it with a cricket bat...you'll see what I mean.
