Today's cat drama

At about eight o'clock last night my 15 year old cat (RSPCA moggy, tabby and white, neutered male) started meowing persistently and going to his litter tray every ten minutes. He hasn't been off his food or anything or shown any signs of listlessness or anything but this was unusual so I was a bit concerned.
Anyway, he kept me up until about 4am meowing so I took him to the vet this morning to see what was up. While I was in the waiting room I was reading a poster on the wall and noticed something about lilies being poisonous to cats and affecting their kidneys. I had never heard this before and was pretty sure I'd seen him eating leaves of the lily plant I have in my back garden. I mentioned this to the vet once she had established that there was some blood in his urine but she said she didn't know an awful lot about plants so I popped home, got some flowers and leaves and compared it to the picture on the wall and made a positive ID. I left him with the vet and asked that she do some kidney function tests as well as checking his urine sample for infection.
The vet has just phoned me now and apparently according to the blood tests the lily eating has done him no harm, though I will be uprooting it completely when I get home, and the blood in the urine is not caused by crystals but is an idiopathic stress reaction of the bladder lining, probably as a result of stress from some run-ins he's had with another cat down the road. I know which cat it is as I saw him legging it away from a big fluffy white cat a few days ago. He's been prescribed an anti-inflammatory and some tablets which will help with the bladder lining.
So all in all I now know that lilies are poisonous to cats, but not apparently mine, and that scaredy-cats will cost their owners a load of money now and then for not much reason. At least it won't be £450 like it was with his teeth a few years ago. Can't wait to collect him later.

I think its the pollen from lillies that is devestatingly poisonous to cats. They get it on them, groom themselves and ingest it. It can kill them very quickly.
We don't buy lillies and if we have them bought for us we snip the stamens out as each flower opens. I'm not taking the risk.
Glad he's ok - urinary problems like that are a pain - literlly and figuratively.

Pollen is just the most likley cause as it is so easily transferable.
The poster in the vet's indeed said every part of the lily. So why, until I dug it up, has it been his favourite plant to nibble the leaves of? He likes the leaves of the strawberry plants too, which I hope are okay.Pollen is just the most likley cause as it is so easily transferable.

I do make sure they avoid it if it has onions/garlic in it.Don't let them (or dogs!) have grapes/rasins either
It's a wonder to me that the cat has made it to 2012 if everything other than cat food will kill them.
Tre (for that is he) was hiding at the back of the kitchen cupboard when I came downstairs this morning. How he knows immediately when I'm planning to give him a tablet I don't know but I guess they pick up on body language or my doing something outside of my normal routine.

I think we'd had our kitten about 3 days when I caught her playing with the orange mucky bit of a lily, none of our cats had ever been near them before, so never even thought
It was a saturday, so off we went to the vets, they flushed her out and a blood test a few days later revealed it had affected her kidneys, just, and had to go on a drip for 24 hours, kidneys were back to normal after that
Needless to say, I don't have lillies in the house again

So - we're besieged by dozens of houses who see a cat as the "MUST HAVE " pet. No maintenance, it will poo in other folks gardens, and stink neighbours cars with the scent from their untended male parts.
Perhaps, I might tear down the fences I've erected to stop my front garden and plant the ultimate cat deterrent - Lillies. I'm not a cat hater, I let my bundle of fur do that, in the hope that they might just stay away.
I've spent a fortune making my front garden cat proof. I put in car access,with bark on the sides.Neighbours cats said "thanks " and I spent a lot of time removing cat poo from the bark.
It's now stone chips as por little moggy don't like digging stone .
I made a border underneath the front window, to get it( and the seeds) get dug up by pets( or pests) from nearby houses . In the end I had I fenced this off, but had to make it higher as it got dug up . By cats, what else . When all those very lazy folks ( who professed to be pet owners) had to do was give the cats a litter tray in the front garden . Not exactly rocket science.
So now I plant lilies and wait for the cat population to decrease. Cats- and their owners are in he same category as dog owners that fail to control their pet. RAnt over

Are you SERIOUSLY saying that you are going to plant Lillys because they kill cats?
They won't deter them you silly little twit

So ANSWER please. Cats dig up garden, no action as cats are not seen as pets. I'd suggest that cat owners start reacting, or I take action , and that means planting cat harmful plants , like lilies. There are all sorts of devices that you can buy, from sonic noises to citrus oils - you don't have to resort to trying to kill people's much loved pets!Sorry folks, I know that is completely against the rules of posting but, he is really boiling my piss, has done for a long time & today has pushed me over the limit!
