Decided against chicken soup, got a fresh chicken and stock cubes making up a broth for him,he has had two lots so far today plus he ate two of his chews but as I said before I am convinced that all the muck on his chest is making it uncomfortable for him to eat, when I do feed him with the syringe and he dribbles after you can see the muck there, when I took him for a little walk this morning he brings the muck up.

Update, After some really worrying days and nights Zak is a lot better, still pretty weak and tired but better, the problem is at the moment getting him to eat voluntarily he will only eat if you put the food in his mouth and you cant do this for long as his throat fills with mucus and stops him swallowing, its almost as if he has forgotten how to eat if that makes sense,Back to the vet yesterday evening for check up and he even tried to jump in the back of the car ,something he would not do for the past 2/3 weeks and despite having to wait over half an hour did not get very stressed he just sat on the floor letting a little girl stroke him.The vet checked his heart/temp etc and all good,he was a little uncomfortable when she pressed his sides and she said he was still pretty sore,if the mucus has not cleared by friday she wants to do another blood test and maybe a referal so they can look down his throat not something I really want, she said that maybe he has a wound in his throat but I am almost 100% sure this is not the case as he is never off lead and never scavenges and if we can get rid of the muck on his chest he will hopefully start to eat,Its going to be a long few days until friday fingers crossed Bill&Zak.

Did you talk to her about coupage as this is specifically designed to remove muck from the chest.

If not please please look into it.

I can't put a link from my phone but if you google Coupage for dogs you'll find info and you tube vids. Often used for pneumonia but would help in this case.

I don't have an answer to that I'm afraid. I do think they should be doing more tests. Have they taken a sample of the muck from his chest to send to the lab?

Have they checked that there is no fluid in the lungs and surrounding cavity?

The vet said she can see nothing on the xrays that gives cause for concern, the weird thing about him not eating is that it seems he does not know what to do! he has had probably 2/3rds of a bowl of food today but only because I am putting it in his mouth and he swallows it,he eats his chews ok ie: chews them as he should,if he wasnt so unwell I would put his food down and leave him to it.Bill&Zak.

Have you thought about getting a second opinion? Zak will know that you are stressed regarding his health and this will have an effect on him too. Keep your chin up, hope he bounces back soon.

Yes I have to say with fluid/mucus etc I'd want an answer. If the vet hasn't got one, then find someone who does.

Update on my best mate, just been to the vet for a check up and thankfully he and my wallet have been discharged!he is nearly back to his old self yipee! on the down side his arthritis has got decidedly worse, now he has always been a little bit stiff but since his illness it seems to got worse with the illness,I have started him on glucosomine tablets which take a while to load up his system and the vet put him on metacam which has done nothing to help at all, so they have now put him on Trocoxil which only have to be given once a month, what I would really like to know is has anybody had any experience with this drug as it seems to get good results,I am not expecting miracles but just to be able to walk him without him being in any pain/discomfort.Bill&Zak.

You may find the arthritis has got worse because he's been poorly and less mobile making his joints stiffen up.

Glad he's feeling better, lots of gentle exercise getting him back mobile will do wonders for his joints. Do you have a Canine Therapy Pool near you that you can take him to? Swimming is great for joint problems as it's a no impact exercise
