Just got a 10 week old Yorkshire Terrier, unfortunately he absolutely stinks.

So is it too early to give him a bath?

Not too young to bath but why is he so smelly? And what are you going to use to bath pup with?

I've sent the wife out to the pet shop for some shampoo, I reckon as long as he doesn't get cold he'll be fine.

Don't know why he smells so strong but it is only the normal doggy smell.

He's called Doug smile

They should have something suitable and gentle, however he shouldn't need bathing too often, no more than every 2 months prob nearer to every 3-4 months (will depend a bit on what you do re: grooming parlours etc when he is older)

Excellent name btw thumbup

For a pup his age I'd recommend Johnson's baby shampoo rather than any doggy ones. It's what we always used for the young dogs at the groomers, they still come out smelling nice but the ingredients in the baby shampoo are nice and gentle.

Dogs should rarely need bathing but giving him one now will help him get used to the process while he's still young and pretty malleable. One of my biggest regrets was not desensitising our cocker spaniel to grooming when she was young.

I used to suggest Johnsons but since learning about the amount of chemicals in it that is supposed to be good for a babies skin but in fact isn't (son has mild skin issues and seen a dermatology nurse) I wouldn't advise it for pups either.

A good gentle puppy shampoo likely to be better as more catered for pups skin. Greenfields is a good one, it's perfume free and colourless.

All shampoos are a concoction of certain chemicals, that's the name of the game I'm afraid. We used Johnsons on every pup under 1 y/o countless times and have never had a problem at the groomers, no itching, no flaky skin, no reactions, nothing! We also used it specifically for adult dogs who do usually have reactions to normal dog shampoo. It is mild enough to not cause problems if it gets into children's eyes, which says alot. I know Johnsons also do a 'natural' shampoo but I've never had any problems with the normal one that have caused me to try it.

Yep I know shampoo's contain chemicals, how patronising!

But there are more gentle and suitable formulas out there that is all I was saying.

To be honest Bex, I find it quite patronising the way you feel the need to follow me around the pet forum. Most things I post are then quoted by you, which is more than a little odd. I do usually just ignore you for the sake of harmony, but it's getting a bit tiresome now.

Johnsons baby is not a harsh formula by any stretch of the imagination. I've had the grand total of zero problems with it in practice. Now, I'm not going to get in a tit for tat argument over shampoo. rolleyes

OP how did Doug's first bath go, hope he didn't mind it too much :-). Any pics of a soggy Doug?

Superficial, I've better things to do with my time than follow you around!

I post on here a lot, you give the impression of having little time for vets etc but my replies are purely based on my knowledge experience and opinions, whether they agree with you or not is of no concern to me!

Apologies for the thread diversion OP

Well, that's what you'd think but it's becoming somewhat of a trend that I find you've quoted me and added your opinion on my posts. I'm all for healthy debate but when it's obvious we sit on opposing ends of the spectrum I don't understand why you feel the need to quote me each time. Like I say, it's getting tiresome and I genuinely care to the sum of zero what your opinion is on my opinions. smile Like yourself and everyone else on the forum, I too post based on my knowledge, experience and opinions, yet my opinions seem to be of great concern to you judging by how often you feel the need to pass comment!

My opinion of vets has nothing to do with what we are discussing, and for the record I have nothing whatsoever against good vets. Unless you count yourself amongst the lesser individuals in the profession I don't see why you get so het up about my feelings towards them.

Please don't be offended by this, I just genuinely cannot understand your mindset of seeking out conflict and am offering a polite request that you stop. smile

How can I not be offended. I have absolutely no interest in seeking you out. I looked through several threads and I see 3 where I have directly commented on yours and 2 of those were to say I agreed with what you'd said but I've since heard/learned different. Most I've made no reply to.

I have a high post count mostly due to this site. I've likely quoted/offered alternative views/agreed with nearly everyone who posts here several times each. I am not going to stop what I do but I can assure you I have no interest in 'targeting' you, never have.

Again OP I'm really sorry for this. Really wasn't expecting to end up causing such a thread derailment, especially over shampoo, ridiculous!

What on earth?

She said she used to use Johnsons and has since learnt it isn't as gentle as perhaps it makes out and so uses something different now

At no point did she attack you or criticise you for using it, she gave her own opinion based on her experience

You need to chill this is a forum for everyone she can post what she wants and reply to whom she wants if you don't want your posts responded to or quoted then don't post
