This isn't something I normally would ask for but as the title we have fostered a staffy x American bulldog that hasn't had the best start in life.
Luna is approx 18 months old and according to a vet has had at least 2 litters already.
For some totally unknown reason Luna has had either boiling water or oil thrown across her back which has left her with burns to her left ear, back and rear legs. She also needs an x-ray for her rear leg as it goes stiff on her.
She was kicked out and found wandering the streets locally by a dog warden.Since then she has been in the dog pound and was looking to be put down as she had served her time there (brutal regime)
We have followed a facebook page set up by a couple who do independant charity work rescuing dogs and trying to find either foster homes or people to adopt.

We recently had to have our dog put to sleep and after reading Luna was set to be put to sleep for no reason we offered her a foster home,we have had her here since last night. She has settled in well and despite her injuries she looks very happy and is a big softy.Doing a lot of sleeping at the moment.

However the charity that got Luna from the pound is in desperate need of funds for Lunas injuries and the injuries other dogs have that are in their care.

If anyone can, could they please have a look at their facebook page and possibly make some kind of donation.
There is plans in the making for further charity events to raise money for Luna and the other dogs in need of veterinary attention.

Here is the page https://www.facebook.com/impawtantpups

Thanks for reading.

What are they treating the burns with at the mo? Tbh this is priority. Xraying her leg can wait a bit.

Flamazine cream is an excellent cream for burns treatment. Hopefully they're using it already.

I hope she gets through it, she looks lovely.

Before she arrived here she spent around 3 hours in the vet getting cleaned up and she had some injections too.
Not being at the consultation I'm not sure what those injections were. All I know is there was painkillers and anti inflammatory mentioned.
She seems to be in no pain with them, just gets a bit itchy.
We have given her an aloe vera bath,as suggested,to ease her a bit which seems to have worked.

She will be going back to the vets this week for vaccinations as a precaution as no-one knows if she ever had any.Doubtful because she still has dew claws.
She will get her treatment,it's not of a case of she has to wait for funds it will be monies owed to the vets.
We in agreement with her rescuers will also take her to our vet who we get along with and see if they will treat her burns for a very charitable fee.Attempt to sweet talk her lol.
The treatment for burns will be her being put to sleep, shaved so they can get to the skin and treat her properly.

As you say burns are the prority, her leg gets stiff when she has been resting.Hobbles around a bit but it gets going again. She has painkillers coming today for the leg and some ear drops for an infection in her left ear which also has some burn marks.

She is a very intelligent dog, obedient too so at some point she has been trained. She is lovely in every single way to be honest. She doesn't seem like a naughty dog although we have noticed if there is food on the go she would steal it given the opportunity.
There is no reason at all to see why someone could have gotten angry enough with her to throw hot water or hot oil over her.Barstewards.

She had a play in the garden yesterday and a run around( garden 80ftx35ft so plenty of room)then pretty much spent the rest of the afternoon/evening sleeping.

She is a dog from the town close to me Burton on Trent so there is plans to get her in the local paper to raise money.

Once she has her injections we need to get her out and see if she is ok with other dogs and look to resolve any issues if there is any.My mate who has a dog will help us out with this one.Just need to check she isn't aggressive with other dogs for no reason and if so over time attempt to correct it.

My other half took some more pictures yesterday so they will appear on the FB page at some point.

All sounds good. The sooner they are clipped and cleaned the more chance they"ll have of healing.

Hope they do use Flamazine cream as it really is amazing stuff.

I doubt they'll vaccinate until her wounds are healed. She shouldn't be esp if she is on eg antibiotics. Having dew claws is a good thing and will be no indication of whether she was ever vaccinated. Anyway even if she had puppy jabs I doubt she'll have had a booster.

Really hope it works out for her, well done on taking her on, she'll recover so much better bring in a home.

Cool hope it goes ok for you.

Found out earlier that the vet Luna saw wants the payment for the burns upfront which is a bit of a slight setback.
Will be looking to sweet talk our vets to treat the burns for her and see if they will allow the charity to pay via instalments.
We'll sort something out.

That's harsh frown. All that delay will mean much more scarring for her. Charging for work is one thing but up front payment is odd unless the charity already owe the vet a lot of money?

Hope your vet will see and treat her today, good luck

Yep the charity do have a lot of abused dogs under their care so maybe its what the vet does for bigger costly operations.
We could have taken her back there to get her vaccinations done as she is ok for them but we decided rather than have the charity invoiced for the vaccinations we have booked her into our vet on Friday (earliest day with chosen vet) for her vaccinations which we will pay for and also give our vet the chance to look at her and discuss.

Fair enough but I'm concerned about those burns, what treatment are you doing at the mo. If they are still healing (or trying to heal) they need topical treatments that won't dry them out (bathing will be too harsh)

Sorry I know I'm sounding like a broken record and I know you've done a fantastic thing by fostering her but Friday is a long time without ongoing treatment for a burn.

So far all we have are painkillers which are more for the leg tbh and anti inflammatory tablets which I assume are for the leg and the burns. We also have on recommendation *100% aloe vera gel to put over her matted fur,but she starts licks it off straight away.
I don't know the vet she has seen so thats all we have for now.She seems to be doing ok with them and coping well.Until Friday thats all we have.

If you have any ideas for further home type remedy then that would be good.

  • Good gel.I burnt my arm on the oven the other night and used this gel, relieved it straight away.
eta: I know the vet she saw spent a long time cleaning them up and treating.

Aloe Vera is good as long as it is a pure form (ie not too many additives or alcohol in it) is that what you were given by the vet?, it will help keep it clean but not so sure how well it will promote tissue to heal but I think it does help.

The fur needs clipping back to healthy tissue then treatment applied.

It is essential she doesn't lick the area. This will stop the gel working and the burns will be very open to getting infected, which she may cause by licking it. Could you cover the area with eg a t shirt?

Other than that there's not much else you can do, your vet on Fri will know what needs doing next.

It's pure Aloe Vera thats used on animals and us.It's not from the vet but recommended for use.

At the moment we discourage her from licking and most of all picking with her teeth. She leaves her legs alone tbh it's her back.
A T-shirt is a good idea tbh.I have loads of old ones that can be used.

As you say not much more we can do until Friday.Hopefully we can get an agreement in place and at the very least get some sort of cream to apply for the time being.

Chipped a tiny amount in, wish it could have been more, would remortgage a hundred times as much to see the perpetrators receive a dose of their own filthy medicine.

Any amount is a big help so thankyou its very much appreciated.
More good news tonight, luna has been given the go ahead for her burns treatment so depending on which vets she will go to (either charities or ours) her burns treatment WILL start early next week.

Sorry for the slight thread hijack here but bit of advice please....

Been thinking about getting a dog for a while and so finally taken the plunge and my foster mutt arrives on Saturday morning. She is the most rubbish looking Alsation I think I have ever seen, coat in very poor condition, flea allergies and under weight and yet still manages to look unbelievably cute. 8 years old and from what the rescue place tell me, she is a lovely old girl. Her owner died and I think she was a bit neglected as he could not cope so no abuse exactly. She lived with a 2 year old lab which has been rehomed so the poor thing is going to turn up here having been in a kennels for a week, having lost her owner and her friend. Not worried about the health stuff, she just needs feeding up mainly so thats no big deal.

I want to make sure she settles well and happily. As I have yet to meet her, I can't say much about her character but I am told she is very calm and responds well to commands.

As you lot seem to be experienced, any advice and general suggestions on getting her settled in?

Stupidly excited to meet her :-)

@ Papa.

With any dog from a rescue the best policy in my opinion is let them come to you.
You both have to get to know each other and learn each others ways.
That said don't let the dog be naughty and at the same time don't let it carry on with any bad habits the dog has if you don't like them.
For example Luna started off by just jumping on a sofa without being asked. Now she waits to be asked.
She was under your feet in the kitchen begging, now she sits at the kitchen door as she isn't allowed in when food is on the go.It hasn't taken her long to learn these things, she is a clever dog..

Update on Luna after visiting our vets. She doesn't want to step on the toes of the charities vet which is fair enough,so Luna is booked in this Monday morning to be clipped and have the burns cleaned properly.
Vets was interesting as we have yet to see if she is aggressive to other dogs. She was waggy for a little bit and then growled a little bit.No snarling or lunging which is good and once we got called in she walked past the dog she got growly with as if it wasn't there.

Planning on getting her out later this afternoon and after talking to someone who has dealt with an aggressive dog before, told me to take a plastic bottle with a squirty top with water in it.If she starts growling or getting ott with approaching or passing dogs give her a squirt of water face area.Apparently it worked for them so will try it.
