My poor defenceless little dog...

We were out in the park today, and as usual I was throwing her glow in the dark ball for her with my ballsistic thrower. This is heavier than a tennis ball, and hard. Mable, my dog, is a 6kg terrier so only a little thing. Anyway I went to throw the ball as usual but the ball stuck in the thrower, and came out late, hitting Mable in the head! I throw this ball a long way usually, so it will have hit her hard frown

She screamed over and over again and went a bit mental frown She eover for a cuddle, tail between legs and was really scared for about ten minutes. She seemed okay when walking home but when I got back she had a big lump on her head, on the inside of her right eye and she just seemed really sad. She's been checked out at the vets and they say she's okay, and the OH is a vet nurse so she knows how to keep an eye on her. She's going to be okay, but all she's doning is curled up in a ball looking sorry for herself and I feel SO bad about it!

I will not be using the thrower with anything but a tennis ball in the future.

Anyone else hurt their dog by accident? Make me feel less evil!? She went in a lake the other week and came out coughing and spluttering and then was sick everywhere! I'm a bad owner!

The day I picked up my old boy as a puppy, we were playing in the garden. He got under my feet and I accidently kicked him into the pond eek

I tread on my cats all the time. But the feckers get under my feet.

I have also thrown a ball for my dog (didn't know he didn't play when we got him) and it just smacked him in the face....

I went to kick Wally's ball, and he put his head in the way, and a full on kick to the face ensued. He wasn't arsed. My foot swelled.

Sorry, I shouldnt laugh, but at least everyone has recovered to tell the tale. smile

Reminds me of when i went for a walk in the local park with my elderly neighbour and her beloved pooches. I had just bought a new aerobie frisbee. Theses things really fly. So as soon as we arrived at the park i got the attention of the excited critter & let fly as hard as i could. It immediately dawned on me what was about to happen!! Immediately under the flight path was a solid fixed wooden bench! You can guess the rest. The poor thing had her eyes glued upwards and she careered at top speed into the bench!! For a moment the thought crossed my mind that her dog was about to meet its maker.

Luckily, she too lived to tell the tale. smile

ditto!
Read another thread on here somewhere about a poor bloke who put his dog's eye out with a thrown stick that was still doing that end-over-end thing just as the pooch was getting to it.

yes! Chip the guide dog that we had for 12 months as a puppy, about 7 months old, my hubby threw a ball with a rope on, which whacked him straight in the eye, and looked terribly sore, straight to vet on out of hours sunday (isn't it always?!) and a few weeks to get better, hubby felt awful and we thought we had blinded a guide dog!!!!!! he too ran howling and terrified, just awful!!

but accidents happen smile

I found myself saying to my cat recently 'I didn't mean to kick you but you reversed backwards onto my foot'...

They do, I keep telling myself that but it doesn't make me feel any better! It was her screaming over and over again that I can't get out of my head! I hope she's feeling up for a walk tomorrow so I can make it up to her. She's been eating my "Tesco Finest" turkey tonight to try and make her a little happier!

She is a right wimp though, she'll often scream and run away from a big dog just becuase it looked at her funny hehe She's usually very playful and boisterous unless it's a big, fluffy (usually dark coloured) dog and she gets all scared.

Kitchen cupboard door shut on my kittens tail few weeks ago, and its soft close so not like it slammed and I stopped it properly closing in time anyway! but he got a fright more than it actually hurting and oh what a song and dance he made about it all (think it was some Tesco finest ham that softened the blow for him funnily enough! lol)

Only recently I had let our Retriever out in the garden late at night & had shut the patio door as it was cold. All of a sudden this bloody firework went off & he ran towards the door but I didn't have time to open it & he hit it at full pelt head first! I felt really bad but he was fine & just came in & went to bed.

Took my dog for a walk. Got to the park, took him off the lead, did all the usual throwing sticks, giving him treat biscuits, etc.

Put him back on the lead and set off for home. About half way home I found an extra treat biscuit in my pocket, so called his name; he looks up at me for treat biscuit and walks straight into a lamppost.

If it helps you feel any better, my chocolate labrador used to like sleeping on the middle stair in the house so she could keep an eye on what was going on upstairs and downstairs at the same time.

I was about to go downstairs quite used to stepping over her but on one occasion lost my footing right at the top slipping onto my back then careering down the stairs feet first. As I slid down in some pain, the dog failed to move so as I fell she was pushed from the stairs falling in front of me straight into the little cupboard at the bottom of the stairs.

As I lay there dazed and with my back in quite a bad way the poor dog came over to me nuzzling my face to make sure I was okay and as I looked at her I could see her constantly licking her lips. On looking in her mouth two of her lower incisors had been knocked clean out and blood was dribbling from a cut on her lip!

I felt absolutely terrible! I know accidents happen but I felt that gut wrenching type of guilt rarely felt in adulthood. Although half crippled from the fall I immediately took her to the vets and all was well but I doubt she was ever spoilt as much in one day with treats as she was that night. All that and her first reaction was to make sure I was okay rather than run away or acknowledge her own pain. Funnily enough she never did sleep on the stairs again after that!

Hearing all these stories maks me feel a little better that it isn't just me that's done something horrible to their dog.

She was okay yesterday, swelling had gone down and she went out for a couple of walks, played fetch etc as usual (with a softer tennis ball!). She did sleep more than usual though, hopefully she'll be back to her usual self today.
