Evelyn Waugh's "On Guard"

I really enjoyed this short story on "Radio 4 Extra".

Part 1 - Before going abroad, a young man buys his fiancee a snappy puppy called Hector.

Part 2 - A small dog called Hector comes to dominate his mistress's life while her fiance is abroad.

It's the story of a lap dog (in the 3rd person but from the dog's perspective) and how he manipulates the life of his mistress.

The ending was a wee bit unpleasant - but not for the doggie.
