I have just been reading an advert for a Labrador.

It says that they are pedigree, and you can view the papers, but you do not get the papers with the dog, the breeder will keep them.

Is this some type of scam?

You'd be barking mad to buy that dog without papers.

Sounds like 1 set of papers for many dogs. Walk away.

If you like the dog and the dog likes you, what's the problem ?

If you'll be breeding from them, it's a problem

IMHO something doesn't ring true

Personally I'd rescue one

Perhaps they mean that you get to see the sire and dams papers to prove the parents are KC registered but that the pups aren't.
My lab has just had 11 pups a week ago, it's feckin tiring looking after them lol

If they mean they won't give you the pups papers then avoid as it makes no sense.

If you proceed, ck the set up carefully, make sure you meet mum at least and ck not too many dogs being bred at same time, try and ck parents aren't too closely related (maybe why they don't want you to have papers?)

Might be worth asking them why and see what reason they give but my instincts says dodgy and avoid!

Any suspicions just walk away. Plenty of other puppies available.

Which papers can be viewed? Just parents or are the puppies registered too? Any credible breeder will have registered the puppies and supply their paperwork with a R endorsement.

There are health tests recommended for Labradors too, again a credible breeder will have had these done and be able to show you the certificates/ results. Can check with a breeder for you if you'd like but the tests off the top of my head for labs are hip scores, elbow scores, clear eye tests.

When we bought our rag doll cat it was x or x + £50 if we wanted the papers. We had no intention of showing her so we paid x. What are you after a show dog or a pet?

We have a Maine Coone cat with a similar deal on the papers. Extra if you wish to breed with it.
Very different deal with dogs. you get all the papers unless there is a problem. I would look elsewhere.

Get a rescue dog who is in need of a home.

Then the papers don't matter and everyone is happy. smile

How is that charge justified? Does it mean papers did not exist and had to be applied for?

I think there is a charge from the GCCF for the certification and the family tree stuff. We expected to pay the x + £50 so saving it after we'd already decided to take her was a bonus.
