The initial treatment the vet gave him is called Advocate, he hasn't been himself today very lethargic and off his food. Would anyone know if this is normal ?

When was it applied?

No not a usual reaction but not an impossible one. It is used a lot and it is very unusual to get an animal to respond badly to it.

Has he eaten at all today? As a very young pup it is essential that he has eaten something.

He ate breakfast fine , but only picked at his dinner and finally managed to finish it at teatime , therefore didn't have his teatime meal . He is still very lethargic this evening. It was applied last night around 10pm.

It is good that he has eaten.

Side effects usually cause vomiting, neurological signs, etc and fairly soon after application, however it isn't for me to say whether he has reacted or not. Keep an eye on him, if he is still not right tom get him back to the vet (or tonight if he worsens) however I would expect him to be feeling better by tom if it was the advocate. Could he have had anything different food wise/ treat wise today?

I am not a vet so please don't rely on anything I say! We use advocat monthly on ours and he really doesn't like it when it first goes on - it smells very strong and I wonder if it burns him a bit when applied - he runs around like a mad man trying to bite at the area it's applied (in between shoulder blades so he can't reach) and then dives under coffee table rubbing his back on floor, I assume to itch or wipe it.
Re lethargy, when ours was a puppy he used to be a bugger to feed and would often skip a meal and be lethargic, this normally correlated with having an exciting day the day before and not much sleep/too much stimulation. He's still the same !

This is a more usual reaction if there is going to be one, it can cause an irritation on the area applied.

He's back to normal this morning, he did have a 15mins playtime with 2 French bulldogs yesterday maybe they tired him more than I realised. He doesn't have great stamina yet I don't think.

That sounds more likely smile. Bulldogs aren't always known for their stamina even as adults! hehe good to know he is better.

Things definitely seem to be improving, still getting some symptoms but not as bad as they were so hopefully another few weeks and we can get back to normality.
On another note we were thinking about insuring the little fella. We had a quote off the kennel club, my God what a joke they are to insure our puppy they wanted more than I pay to insure my car, van , motorhome and house combined and that included my introductory offer.

They aren't daft. Bulldogs can suffer a multitude of health issues and they cost insurance companies a lot.
People seem to be getting good quotes from Animal Friends and Agria just check what they will cover.

Good to hear the allergies are easing. My Son having lived with cats all his life now starts sneezing on returning home despite Minnie being about him for years!!. I'd go to the Bulldog Rescue site and inquire about who people there use for insurance. They also have a list of Bulldog knowledgeable Vets. The foremost of which is a guy called Tom Bingham. Seems to be almost legendary in the Bulldog world!

Pleased to hear it is sorting itself out.

Regarding insurance, I will no doubt get shot down for this, but having had this breed since the 50s in my family, we've never had insurance, and never regretted it.

Just put a bit of money aside every month, current 13 year old has probably cost £1000-1500 in vet bills all in.

After a day or 2 thinking things were improving we are both suffering again. The dog is spotless and so is the house, have ordered some Petal cleanse as nothing the vet supplied seems to be doing the trick.Starting to wear us down now and thinking Petal cleanse is our last resort before having to think about rehoming him.

The instructions state it takes up to 3 weeks to work fully and to treat him weekly. There's no mention of Bath time ; should he be treated after a bath ? He loves his baths.
