I found Eurostars Grand Central well situated for the majority of things. It's also right next to the station, so it's easy to get to from the airport.

I almost always use Ibis or one of their sister hotels when touring Europe.

You know exactly what you're going to get, you always get a half decent breakfast and they always have some kind of bar. Most are handily located near city centre landmarks and they're usually very good value.

We stayed at the Ibis Munich City. I can recommend Hackerhaus for food and beer, if you want to do the full-on traditional German thing. Nuremburg sausages, sauerkraut and potato dumpling, washed down with Weiss.

We stayed at the Park Inn by Radisson on the Ring road to the north of Munich. about a 5 min ride on the U Bahn into the centre of town. And one of the directors at work stayed at Fleming's Hotel, which is a short walk from Augustiner brewery (has a excellent restaurant) and the Augustiner beer garden which is the other side of the trainlines leading into Central Station.

Munich does have an excellent public transport system with the underground system and the trams covering a huge amount of area. plus the centre is quite compact. so don't worry about being too far out from the centre of town.
