Allergies are a funny one with bulldogs , is he on a grain - free diet ?! Tried Keifer milk?!
Rufus has wellness core grain free and added to it, keifer milk, coconut oil and green muscle extract and Benadryl for the summer .

We ve tried him on different foods , taste of the wild made him very ill there’s definite issues with that food , royal canin isn’t grain free. We ll potentially go down the raw diet at some point but I want to give him a break from chopping and changing for a while.

As for insurance , yes we have an all singing and dancing policy since he was born , it covered his cherry eye last year and after today’s vet visit for his troublesome skin condition - 500 quid later - we ll be claiming for that, I don’t care that much aslong as he’s on the mend and healthy.
It’s the odds and ends that mount up, and I never bother going through the agg of form filling, so I suppose it’s my own fault.

Nice to see others with bullies on here, sharing information and general chit chat , puts a smile on my face!

Yeah he has been through a few different types of food so far, he was originally on Royal Canin French Bulldog junior variety as that's what the breeder used, then onto the adult version around a year and it wasn't too long after that he started having issues and getting itchy. Tried switching him onto Acana grain free but this didn't seem to make any difference and we have ended up on Vet Concept kibble made form horse meat, its designed for sensitive dogs with just one protein (horse) and selected veg and he seems to like it, apparently horse meat is hypoallergenic.
The vet thinks its likely more of a contact allergy than anything else since there wasn't much change with the different foods.

We are going to see their allergy specialist sometime soon once hes fully recovered from the castration to see what else we could do about it, so fingers crossed he figures it out. Thankfully its at least under control now and not really bothering him, but I don't want him to be on medication all his life if possible.

I had been reading this site recently ( http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/systemic_yea...) about how yeast infections can sometimes be confused with allergies, its quite a long read but im wandering if this may be related.

Thanks for the hint about kefir milk, I hadn't heard of that before for dogs, I was googling it now and I see it supposedly helps with yeast issues, so I think i will give that a try along with the coconut oil, hopefully it helps.
How much do you normally add per meal?

Totally agree about your last comment too, this is by far my favourite thread on Pistonheads, a friendly corner with no nitpicking and BS that goes on in many other threads! thumbup

Cheers for the link I ll give it a read,

Yeast infections can be given away by the smell , its quite recogniseable .

Malaseb wipes and shampoo along with Keifer milk are just the job for yeast related issues. The wipes for his wrinkles and shampoo for the rest of him!

Rufus hates the bath, runs and hides which is ironic considering he ll find the deepest muddiest puddle in the park and dives straight in, so we stick him in the shower now so he can’t escape!

Quarter of a regular sized cup of Keifer milk at meal times initially to check it’s tolerated . we just pour it on his food a quarter should do it anyway as your fella is a lot smaller than ours, Rufus loves it.

we also do a teaspoon of coconut oil, again mixed in with his food. It ll make his coat super shiny and is good topically for nicks and grazes also.

Regards

Yeah that's what I had read as well about yeast infections, we have noticed he had become a bit more smelly than normal since this started but its a kind of urine like smell on his coat, the vet didn't seem to have any concern of this when I pointed it out and just said its normal sometimes, she also said it might improve after he is castrated so will see how that goes.

We thought perhaps he was just picking it up from grass etc rubbing on him when out and about but not sure. I'm not convinced it is yeast related but guess it cant hurt to try it out anyway.

Rocco doesn't enjoy a shower either but tolerates it, however he loves the hair dryer afterwards!
