Apologies for the slight deviation, but I thought this thread would be a good place to ask, with a high number of dog owners. I also didn't think it warrants its own thread.

Tonight one of ours, a 6 yr old Viz x Dobe gave us a proper scare. After tea they each have a denta-stick, which always get polished off in seconds. Tonight he took it, but then didn't want it, which was worrying as so out of character.

He then took himself to bed, and within a minute he was shaking pretty strongly. Worried I checked him over and his heart was racing. He was really withdrawn too, extremely unlike him. Also in the car he was simply lying on Sarah looking sorry for himself, whereas he is normally really excited about looking around out of the car.

We rushed him to the vets who spent a good 20 minutes checking him over, to declare he's all good.

Anyone any ideas what may have been up with him?

He could have told me he was OK, before I passed a police van coming the other way, doing *slightly* more than 60 rushing him to the vets!
Something similar happened to my old pal, can’t remember off the top of my head what the vet said caused it, it’s was the best part of 14 years ago now, think they gave him an adrenaline jab or something. He’d just been for a walk and was laying out in the garden cooling off when we got back, and suddenly had a funny turn and started shaking violently and his heart was racing like yours was.

Still miss him, such a character.

Many thanks. We've been watching him overnight and this morning, and he's back to his normal self now.
Lasy year we took Jerry to the out of hours vet after he had looked withdrawn all day, with his tail between his legs and occasionally wretching.

She gave him the once over and declared him fundamentally OK, and was discussing our observation of him on-going with my wife as she paid - some £180 - which doesn't matter to me, even if it was £1800 because Jerry is family - you will all understand this...

However...

... while this conversation was going on, I took Jerry outside to let him wander around the car park and have a wee but in front of the door, he did a massive zhit (for a tiny dog) then immediately perked up. I don't think my wife had typed in her PIN at this point so it was a bit of a wallet crushing moment.

It's funny you mention.... one of the things checked involved the vets finger up his bum. She said to the effect of 'he's ready to go, and there's some quite hard poo there'

Maybe he was in pain, needing to relieve himself? She did say the symptoms we described suggested discomfort or pain.

Pet passport from your vet (approx. £40) and apart from a vet giving your furry friend a worming tablet before you return to the UK that is it.

We have done 5 France/Spain trips and loved every minute of bringing Lottie with us.

Not sure what paperwork is needed in other countries but no issues with France/Spain.

I'm currently in France, and it's the first time I've ever taken a dog with me. Eurotunnel provided instructions for our return which are exactly as described above. We asked the campsite when we booked if they could nominate a local English-speaking vet and they kindly provided us with contact info. The vet responded to my email very quickly with an appointment as requested which is at least 24 hours and no longer than 120 hours before your return. You'll need your dog's passport that the vet will need to document your dog's worming treatment, and that's it.

Eurotunnel also requests "When travelling from our French Terminal, take your pet to the Pet Reception building before you check in". I guess this is where they check the dog passport.

That is a very helpful reminder (check the dog in at Pet Reception, off to the right at the Calais Terminal where they check your dog's chip and the worming page in the passport has been signed - cost is less than 25 Euros) BEFORE you check the car in:

Not allowed to take my dog to France, turns out Mastiffs are on the banned breed list which I find a bit odd seeing as they have dogue de bordeaux

If nothing else that just shows how ludicrous a "banned breed list" is. Hint, you're looking at the wrong end of the lead.

Couldn’t be easier as described above. At the pet reception France side they will give you something to hang on your mirror to say dog has been checked then through the rest as normal.

Going in a few weeks road trip to Spain again. Can’t wait.

Just looked at the banned dog list, Staffy's without a pedigree are banned too.

Blimey, I never even thought to check. Mind you, I reckon we're safe with Jerry. He's about as threatening as a hamster.
