Two new kittens, first time cat owners (family choice) approximately 6months old and littler tray trained.

And we are trying out different types of kitty litter. So far we know we like the clumping type but the clay tends to stick to the paws and carry through the house much more that the wood pellet and paper pellet stuff.

Any suggestions as to what would give us the clumping of clay but doesn't travel at all, or minimally.

V.

I use recycled paper pellet stuff and it seems to do the trick for us apart from going through about 20 quids worth per month (60L). We flush that too.. it's paper after all.

I was wondering why clumping is preferred? In fact I've always wondered about clumping but was too afraid to ask.. until now

Clumping is quite amazing really, it binds to the poo or wee and creates little (or not so little in some cases) balls of clay. My daughters call it 'doing the lucky dip' when we check the tray each morning and evening.

We use oko plus usually from zooplus via quidco.

http://m.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter/cats_b...

It clumps, it does track a bit, but it's easy to sweep up.

We had the problem with fullers earth that it made the waste bin very heavy. Oko can be flushed (I don't due to septic tank) or composted (when you are washing the tray I.E. no poo! It seems to last us ages (5 cats).

We used to use sophisticat, but that just seemed to get dearer and dearer and was heavy.

Another Oko user here (for the cat!!) some tracking but happens which ever litter we use due to her fluffy feet (Maine Coon)

It is expensive but lasts ages!! Only need to completely clean tray once a week. Very easy to remove the clumped (dirty) litter in the morning.

"World's Best Cat Litter" user here. My two idiot Arabian Mau's are happy on it, tried lots before and this is the only one that seems to work.

Its basically ground corn husks, so can be flushed, some tracking but not much and really does contain the smell which is a bonus out here in the Middle East...I use the red bag, a friend has the purple one.

Not the cheapest out there but one big bag lasts about 2 months, then its a complete refresh (even though you don't actually have to do a full refresh).

I use the wood pellet litter from Pets at Home. Easily to clean up, cheap, contains smells well and you can flush it down the loo without any problems.

I also read a few scare stories about clumping litters which are probably a load of tosh but why take the risk when others are available?

I thought I'd read something about them breathing in the dust or cleaning it off their paws and it being bad for them.

Is that a load of cobblers?

I don't know tbh. I hadn't seen any so was genuinely curious.

They aren't that dusty as long as you don't use the dregs so that doesn't concern me. Cleaning it off their paws would be one to check further though. Would need to see what they think it causes. We have used it for a few years now, no side effects that I am aware of. Plus she has managed to get every type of litter we have tried stuck to her feet at some point in time!

That is my fear.

That this will be a never ending circuit of 'Ooooooo lets try this one' from Mrs V, where I am very much a 'if it works dont change it'

I would tend to agree, you do risk picking a litter your cat won't like and not using.

We use wood chip because that's what the cat originally came with from Cats Protection and we were advised not to change it.

It tracks a bit, but I think that is far outweighed by the pleasantness of use - it doesn't smell at all - and the used litter can be composted.

I use that stuff as well, easy to clean up although I don't want to risk flushing it. As Claire says it isn't cheap, but the convenience and longlivity makes up for it.

Our sewage system isn't the greatest where I live, but it copes really well with this stuff somehow, never - touch wood - had a blockage or anything.

And in this intense heat that Dubai is currently in the middle of, still no smell from their two trays when I get home from work.
