Is there a better / more efficient way to keep a small tank bright & clean, than the usual little filter pump inside & regular rolling up my sleeves to do a gravel suck, glass clean etc?

Depends what you mean by a small tank and what's in it?

Think 30 litres. Regular tropical - guppies, tetras, loaches type of stuff

Clean it little and often, and it won't be a major task.

Yes, Bigger tank and oversized filter, keep understocked and feed "Fresh" (Frozen) food but don't over feed.

Small water volumes are a nightmare to keep in balance and the bigger the tank the easier it is.

You still need weekly water changes/gravel vacs though.

Had a larger 200 litre tank previously, but now with the kids space is a premium so downsized to this.
Just seeing if there's a way to avoid the weekly slosh.

Could you get away with a Fluval roma 90? That tank is tall so its footprint is not much bigger than a 30l. I used to have one and the capacity is perfect for a low maintenance, lightly stocked tank. It is is also well built so will be more likely to withstand a knock.

Update, ended up with this:

Apart from 'losing' the 2 smallest fish into the filtration system I delighted with it. Love that all the gubbins is hidden away. (including the 2 fish...)
