Every year the fking starlings nest under the corner of the roof tiles making a racket every morning. I keep meaning to block the hole up with wire mesh but have just realised I might have left it too late!

They don't start laying until March do they? If so, could I block it up now?

The RSPB say:
"Starlings usually lay 4-6 eggs in mid-April"

So you'd better get the ladders out!

Do this.

For the last couple of years we had some starlings nesting under the tiles.

Unfortunately they were not happy just under the tiles and proceeded to migrate into the soffit be simply pecking all the underfelt and insulation away.

On inspection I had what appeared to be a large hay bale under my tiles and in my soffit and indeed the resulting straw and twigs collection filled two plack bin bags.

Once I removed the detritus I blocked the hole up.

The very next day they then found another small gap and attempted to repeat their squatters behaviour and I had to block that hole up also.

So far so good. No bird noises coming from the roof or eaves. I have noticed next door has some squirrels in ther roof above their garage however.

Bloody nature.

Cheers,

Tony

You've still got plenty of time, wild birds don't lay eggs in Winter.

Thanks for the replies. Shoved a load of wire up there in the gap - they were not amused at all smile

Noticed there's loads of loft insulation in the gutters - fkers!!

If she's got electric cables they can get at they will very likely gnaw through the sheathing & could be the cause of a fire.
Happened to a friend's (no, not me) outbuildings & the local fire brigade who attended & put it out said it's not unusual.
