I think this comic strip (unlikely I know) sums it up well, but it can be hard to read under the circumstances:

Bloody hell.

That got me right in the heart.

Very moving piece.

She just got up and came and waited until I picked her up as she struggled to jump onto the chair.

Now sleeping with her head on my lap.

I know it's now time so I am going to ask the vet to come to the house tomorrow rather than getting her assessed.

I want her at home at the end.

The final act is one of love.

Making that decision for our pets is repaying them for all the love they have given to us over their lifetime.

Good luck tomorrow.

tears are not a sign of weakness.

My best friend was put to sleep at midday.

Heart is in bits but I know it was the best thing to do.

Your heart will repair, although there will always be an element of sadness.

If we didn’t suffer the sadness we would never know joy.

It’s a trite saying, but time is a great healer.

Molly looked lovely.

I'm very sorry. I hope your experience, while devastating, wasn't too harrowing. The comparatively empty house is tough to contend with for a while cry but you should look back with pride on how that creature enjoyed such a charmed existence for such a long time as your companion.

What a beautiful girl. Run free at the Bridge, Molly, young and well again.

How sad. I have been thinking about you all day.

We had to have our Cocker put to sleep in November and it has still left a massive hole in our house. It does get easier but you never forget. I use the dog pictures thread on this forum as some slight relief/therapy.

Thoughts are with you Jim and of course the lovely Molly cry

Thank you mate.

The joy she gave was huge so you can't have that and not suffer when it goes.

Why does everything you now see on TV got to do with dogs.

Isn't it just typical.

Thank you mate.

It was not exactly straight forward as they were struggling to find a vein.

Had to try a number of area's but she was thankfully sedated.

It was myself that was struggling with that bit.

It's crazy that you love something so much yet the best way to love that being is to have it put down.

Anyway as much as it hurt she is at peace.

Thank you so much.

I am sorry for your loss. As you say it gets easier but you never forget.

She is actually resting at a pet crematorium. The place is beautiful and a family run business. It was extremely hard to leave her but we are in rental accommodation just now so can't obviously keep her here. That was hard to accept.

Nothing helpful to add that hasn't already been said, this thread really is making me appreciate my time left with my ageing friend. Struggling to type this as this thread has really got me In the heart. I hope you find some way to start dealing with your loss when the time is right. All the best mate.

Why... why... why would you do that to me?!! cry

From one Jim to another Op, such a beautiful pup. You did the right thing by her when she needed it and from your words I’m sure she had such a fantastic life.

Remember what you gave her and she’s in no pain now. Maaan, they get under your skin.

I was where you are in October. Ripped my guts out.

As per that cartoon, it’s the saddest yet kindest thing you can do at that time.

Don’t leave it forever until you get a new best friend. He/she won’t replace but will help heal your heart.

Your pooch would want this I’m sure.
