I like to walk by water, being as far from the coast in the UK as possible this means rivers, canals, lakes etc.

I notice from the EA website that rivers can be affected too (I mistakenly thought it was still water) Anyway of recognising if a waterway is affected?

From another thread. Don't know whether it will help.

If it’s green it’s fine, the issue is when it turns blue that you need to avoid.

My DDB got in a body of water with fairly serious blue green algae blooms and drank from it. No noticeable effects but did cause a bit of panic!

It is best to be avoided and if you get the blue on you rinse it off as soon as you can, but I don;t think it really does you any harm.

The whole body of water isn't infected/affected it'll just be at the edges where the green dries out.

I used to run summer sailing clubs fro kids in a lake with it and we never had an issue.

Probably the greater risk of drinking the water is weils disease!
