MG Chris, you can over stock a tank providing you have adequate filtration....

Either a sump or one maybe two big externals for a 300 litre would be great.

My last 600 litre Malawi tank had three big externals, all Eheims....

That doesn’t look like white spot to me - too large. looks like a single large lump, possibly the sort of benign skin tumour goldfish sometimes get.

This is the space measures at 164cm wide and 40cm deep but could go out further to match the mantel next to it. A 4ft tank is around the 300 litre mark which leaves me 1ft so was thinking of putting a tall but narrow shelving unit. The sofa will be where the photo was taken so can see straight at it while lounging around.

If you can make your own Cabinet, someone like ND will make custom tanks for a sensible price.

I've seen a 4ft tank with cabinet with all the lights pump heaters etc for £500 brand new but looking out for a 2ndhand unit nearby me. Got about 2 months till I move in so will keep an eye out over the next month or so.

Have you got a link to the company?

Re overstocking, yes you can, by adding extra filtration, but...

The physical space itself will not expand, and fish do need a certain amount of room to swim in, so don't go mad smile

Bit of an update while searching for a tank popped in to the local to my new house anyway independent pet store that has a section for tropical and fresh water fish didn't have much stock bar the usual angle fish, minows, guppies, platys due to Christmas etc but he gave me a load of good pointers for starting up and also confirmed the area has soft water but he can check with a sample when im setting up. He can also source any fish that im interested in using.

After a search over Christmas a local facebook group come up with a guy downgrading his fish set up and had a 300 litre tank set up only 15 miles away. Complete with cabinet, pump, heater, lights, gravel and a few other bits and piece, just managed to squeeze it into the back of a discovery but managed to get it back.
Got to sort out the house first but will get stuck in when im close on moving in and can start with the fishless cycle then.

Will update with progress and further info.

Are they acute angle fish? The other variety can be quite obtuse.

300l is a proper good size, enjoy.

I had a 120l when I was a teenager and really enjoyed it.

I haven’t had an aquarium for many years now and I couldn’t get anything big because I’m anticipating one or more relocations, but I am oddly compelled to get a 60l Biorb or similar and put some plants and half a dozen Minnos in it.

Used to hate the things when I had a ‘proper’ tank.

Anybody know how bad the actual kit is? Nor that impressed with the look of the lighting or heater, nor the fact that the bowl itself is made of acrylic which scratches readily. Wondering if I can achieve something just as bad by starting with a large glass bowl and doing my own filter, heating and lighting- or even going without heating altogether since the house is probably close enough to ideal Minno temperature.

Bit of an update from before, tank is about 50% stocked, water quality levels all good, though getting PH down below 7.8 is a bit of a mission (hard water here) I may be chasing rainbows though as none of the fish are terribly acidic water dwellers.

Inhabitants:

6 Zebra Danio (in your face, whizzy)
6 Glowlight tetra (shy)
6 Rummy nose tetra (not shy at all, also whizzy)
13 Neon tetra
2 Dwarf Gourami (red M/F pair) slow and sedate
5 Zebra Nerite snails (for algae eating)

I'm not too unhappy so far, although getting rid of algae is a bit of a chore (come on snails) I've ordered a long handled scraper as I can't get the magnet one to get at the rear as the gap between tank and wall is too small.

You can't really tell from the picture but the plastic plants are horrendously agaefied, if my new snail friends don't get rid of it I'll have to lift em out and scrub em. I don't recall having the problem to this extent in any other tanks I've had though.

Plastic plants seem to hng onto algae for some reason.

Try getting some live plants, Vallis or similar -they would help mop up excess Nirtrates......

Flicking back through the posts on this thread has got me wanting a tank again.

It's nearly 5 years since I hastily got rid of mine after moving house and seeing cracks appear!

It was 5ft ish, around 300 litres. Custom tank from ND aquatics. Couple of external filters, LED lighting on a program to emulate sunrise/sunset and try and make the colours of the fish pop under different lights.

I built the cabinet and lid myself. (In my early days of woodworking hehe )

Theme was central American river. All started around a Panama cichlid I picked up randomly. I tried to make it as natural looking as possible.

Background was shaped polystyrene covered in coloured concrete and pond resin. Few stones stuck in there.

I just don't have the space for anything like this now ?? I've dipped in and out of the idea of a small marine but I like well stocked tanks.

Pics...

I'd reckoned on 500-600 kg with the stand. Probably why my house cracked hehe
