Today has not been a good day...

My tank crashed after my lovely little boxfish died and released a tank full of Tetrodotoxin, wiped out every tang - (regal, naso, sailfin, goldrush, orange shoulder) 4 wrasse, about 20 chromis, two dwarf angels and a few firefish. I've not seen any of the dozen or so hermits.

Sorry to hear that Steve, I truly am. You must be devastated.

If you are who I think you are, I thought you had a large tropical set-up?

My sympathies. Sounds absolutely devastating.

I lost one of my first 10 cardinal tetra last night, that I only put in a week ago which was upsetting. But your loss puts that into perspective!

Great response from your shop though. Hope you save as many as possible.

Changed another 300l this afternoon, another kg of carbon in the sump, and on my way to get another 300l to change tomorrow.

The 4 biggest fish have pullef through the night although they have some stress marks and one isn't swimming too steadily but has his colour back.
A few hermits have shown up including the monster Hercules.
Another chromis has appeared, but again isn't swimming too well.

Both urchins have appeared too, along with the 2 clowns and Hercules, they've been with me for 7 years since I first got into marine. They are my OG inhabitants.

Just to put this all into further perspective, we've been shielding for 5 weeks as my other half is going through chemo and radio therapy and has zero immune system. On top of weeks of bad sleeping and avoiding contact with everyone - even the kids have gone to live elsewhere whilst this is ongoing.
She had to keep well out of the way whilst me and the fish guy sorted out the toxic mess yesterday, and then I had to sanitize everything in the kitchen and dining room where the tank is before she could come down.

As far as timing goes, the boxfish really couldn't have picked a worse time to die and nuke the tank.
Cute and friendly as they are, and even knowing the risks, just not worth it unless they are in a tank of their own.

I think it's more that when they die, they immediately release an horrific toxin into the water... It's their defence against predation I believe (bit like the fugu pufferfish eaten in Japan but only prepared by specially trained chefs).

I came on to post a question/questions about replacing our current ageing tank. Will ask later. Commiserations on your loss. Sounds like you are having a bad time. Chin up I guess. Unfortunately owning ‘pets’ always has a downside. Just gotta get through them bits....

Ah, of course, I knew there was something about them that was sketchy.

Yes, exactly this. Puffer and Boxfish are part of the same sub-species of fish, Tetraodontiformes, and the subsequent "nerve agent" is incredibly potent https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrodotoxin?wprov=s...

The toxicity of the fish is hugely variable, some species of boxes and puffers have barely any within them, while others are thermonuclear.

It looks like the final chromis has now vanished -most of the other survivors are still doing ok, but one is still highly stressed and hiding in a corner. The lights are off and blinds are closed in the room as they are less stressed in darkness.

I may need to order in dinner rather than use the kitchen tonight.
The fish shop bill was just shy of £400 so it'll only be a cheap takeaway

On the flip side, in 7 years I've never had a vet bill for the fish....

As hard as the losses must be - to have any still swimming is an amazing outcome thus far.

Some of the scaling compared to my little nano though, a kg of carbon would last me years!

One thing I will say - your posts may have saved more fish than yours... I'm planning my upgrade, and had heard box fish were great characters.

What a difference av week makes... That's the little stehawk towards the top right. The three big fish on the right survived, pretty much everything else in the picture was lost.

The rock left in is epoxy'd together in one lump, everything else is out and soaking in RO water to start resetting it. When I have the cabinet swapped in a couple of months I'll do a rescape with it.

"Gordon" the 12" Javan Rabbitfish has perked up loads and has taken some seaweed from my hand, and leaning against my fingers.

"Everton" the big blue spot surgeonfish is still very stressed and is hiding at the back.

At least he's now upright, after spending most of yesterday on his side in a builders bucket with the engineering goby, two hot water bottles and an airstone

Even my TVR doesn't give me this much heartache.
Why do we choose such damn stupid hobbies?

Sorry to hear about this Steve.

I’m not too far away from you and I have a van if you need the load space for collecting anything.

Sorry I can’t offer any more help than that.

Was that a desjardini sailfin?

Utterly heartbreaking. Some gorgeous adult fish there.

Thanks for the offer - I have a Hilux as a daily and access to pretty much anything with wheels through my job. A local contact with a saltwater swimming pool may be useful to know if you can help!

Yes, and was one of the early inhabitants of the big system, along with the Naso. Both had been there for around 5 years, and started off much smaller.

I don't think it is possible for a fish to be affectionate, but I'm watching Gordon press himself next to the glass every time I walk past - normally he just wiggles a bit thinking he is getting fed, but as I've not put anything more than a pinch of pellets and seaweed in since Saturday morning, it's probably just the next stage of telling me he is hungry.

Everton is still hiding though - I'm hoping another dose of ATM Triage after another 300l water change later today will keep him hanging on.

Somehow a load of snails have come out of the sand overnight - they are usually the first victims of any water imbalance.

Snails don't have the same type of blood as fish/etc. do they?

Just as corals aren't actually bothered by ammonia, as it's toxic effects don't work on things without haemoglobin.

I guess so but then the TTX works on the nervous system so I would have expected them to go. The more I've read about TTX - it's properly nasty stuff, like banned chemical weapons bad....

I found a fire shrimp alive a few minutes ago too - he had a mate somewhere so hopefully both have made it.
