It's probably normal for some dogs, but 10 years seems a short time to me. We've had Fraggle for 8 years now - we think she was 2 when we got her from the rescue centre - and I hope she has many years left.

As I understand it, and I’m no expert, A decent life expectancy for a German shepherd is around 10-12 years. They are quite well know to have hip and leg problems. I think Dave was around 10 years and 8 months. He started going down hill around October, and whilst he could have been operated on, it came with risks from the anaesthetic. Dad chose to go down the route of massage therapy. It got to the point where Dave couldn’t take himself outside so they knew it was time to say goodbye. Agree, hopefully Fraggle has plenty more years to go.
